Ford Motor Company Teams With State of Michigan to Cut Down on Teen Crashes

WESTLAND, Mich. - Ford vehicles are known for offering a variety of safety features to keep you and your young driver safe on the road - whether it be a lane departure warning, obstacle avoidance system, or one of the other safety features, Ford puts safety first. However, no amount of safety features can prevent a crash from happening if the driver is behaving recklessly on the road. To educate young drivers on the dangers of reckless driving, the Ford Motor Company has announced that they will be teaming up with the state of Michigan to cut down on teen crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic accident rates for 16 -19 year old drivers are higher than any other age group. In fact, in the state of Michigan it has been estimated that 10 percent of all deadly crashes in 2012 involved drivers under the age of 21. It is believed that unsafe speeds, poor hazard detection, and low risk perception all have a huge part to play in crashes with young drivers.

To help cut down on deadly crashes involving teens, Ford Motor Company will help fund a Parents Supervised Driving Program. Under this program, Ford will pay for teen driving guides to be handed out to parents across the state. These guides provide parents of teen drivers with curriculum that has been developed to maximize the value of the supervised driving component of getting a driver's license. Essentially, when your teen is learning to drive and they have reached the stage in their training where the parent is supposed to ride along with them and supervise their driving, this program will assist parents in providing their children with clear, concise and easily actionable instructions.

Ford Tests Car That Can Park By Itself

WESTLAND, Mich. - Ford tested a car that can park by itself in Belgium this week, experimenting with the technology that would allow your vehicle to navigate itself into a tight spot - with or without you behind the wheel.

The technology, better known as Fully Assisted Parking Aid, uses ultrasonic sensors to scan the area for parking spaces up to 18 mph. That means, as you're cruising through a parking ramp or down a side street looking for a parking space, your vehicle is already scoping out the area for you. The car will then alert the driver to a space, giving you enough time to stop and not bypass it.

After you and your vehicle have located a space, you will put your car  into neutral and then push a parking button - from inside the car or outside via the keyfob. The vehicle would then take over for you and control the steering, acceleration, braking and guidance systems until it has moved itself into the space - this works for both diagonal and perpendicular parking.

Ford currently offers an Active Park Assist technology on its vehicles, which helps you steer the wheel into parallel parking spaces. The only difference is that the driver must still apply the gas and brakes. The Fully Assisted Parking Aid would have complete control when parking, giving you the option to make your vehicle do all of the work.

Ford is currently testing cars that can park by themselves, but aren't releasing a ton of information just yet. This means that the Fully Assisted Parking Aid technology hasn't been linked to any specific Ford vehicle just yet, but the Active Park Assist is available in numerous current models. Ford is Teaming Up With Russian Space Robots to Help Make Your Car Safer

As part of this information gathering process, Ford is teaming up with Russian space robots to help make your car safer - we're not joking.

The communication system that exists between the International Space Station and Earth is one of the most advanced and effective ever created. To better understand how this communication flow works, Ford will be teaming up with Russian researchers to observe and learn how they communicate with their robots in space. The information gathered will be used to create the most effective and useful vehicle-to-vehicle communication possible.

The vehicle-to-vehicle communication will work on something called a 'mesh network', meaning that communication is wireless and sort of 'blanketed' across cars. Ford is concerned about what would happen if an accident were to occur and a vehicle's communication system were damaged or taken offline. To better understand this issue, Ford will be examining specifically how Russian researchers keep their communication systems constantly functioning - even in the wake of a system outage. This will allow Ford to create an emergency messaging protocol that will keep drivers informed about a damaged vehicle, even if the vehicle is 'offline'.
