WESTLAND, Mich - A few weeks ago at the Beijing Auto Show, Ford revealed the all-new Escort sedan to the public. This compact sedan may be offered around the globe eventually, but this model has been created specifically with the Chinese market in mind. The Ford Focus has been a major driver in Ford's China sales growth and a huge success over the last few years. So, this poses the question - Why is Ford Motor Company Bringing Back the Escort?

Well, to answer that, we have to explain exactly what the new Escort is. It's a Focus sedan that has been modified in some key ways to meet specific Chinese tastes and needs. The Escort has significantly more rear-seat legroom than the Focus, which is a key selling point. In the United States, we think of the backseat as a place for children, but in China this is not always the case. For instance, with the hectic urban traffic, those who can afford to hire professional drivers plan on sitting in the backseat of their own vehicle. For those who don't have a driver, the comfort of any other passenger, especially grandparents, is taken into deep consideration when purchasing a vehicle. 

From a style point of view, the Escort is a toned-down version of the Focus sedan. Models that are not ostentatious, but still nice are more appealing to certain sectors of the Chinese market. As much as the Focus has been a hit for Ford China, some folks believe that is just a tad bit too flashy for their taste. Ford Escort Concept Debuted at Shanghai Auto Show

WESTLAND, Mich.- Once the best selling car in the world, Ford Motor Company is looking to revive a popular nameplate. This past weekend the automaker debuted the Ford Escort compact concept vehicle! Ford's most popular vehicle name behind the F-series pickup, the Escort, made its official debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in China.

Unconvinced that the needs of the market were being completely met by the current vehicle offerings, Ford has taken the first step to bring back an updated Escort. Based on the Ford Focus chassis, The Ford Escort concept car is stretched a little to achieve a more spacious interior. But the Escort concept aims to be more affordable than its original replacement, the Ford Focus.With a more upright roofline, the concept is stylish while still appealing to Chinese tastes. Designed for the Chinese market, it is significant that the jewel-like headlights on the concept resemble the Chinese character for the number 8 which is considered lucky as a portent of wealth.

The Ford Escort Concept that Debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show will be the automaker's third compact sedan. While it may seem excessive, it works well in a country like China where the country's wealth levels vary widely. Plus, compact cars make up 60% of the new vehicle market in China. However, the Escort is still just a concept. It's unknown whether the car will ever be built even though it's close to a production model. Even so, if the vehicle is produced, it it will likely stay in China since it was designed specifically for the Chinese market.
