Criminals will often target officers when they are in their vehicles, believing them to be the most vulnerable - especially if they can sneak up from behind. This new surveillance system, the first of its kind, will provide police officers with the security that they won't be ambushed from behind while sitting in their vehicles.

This Ford Motor Co. surveillance system sounds a chime, locks the doors and puts up the windows if it detects someone approaching the car from behind. Officers are often the most vulnerable at night, especially when they are in an area that is not packed with a lot of pedestrians. This system would ensure that they wouldn't be taken by surprise.

The safety feature is officially called "Surveillance Mode", and can be turned on or off. This is especially useful for when an officer is in a high traffic area, since the system is not as necessary when there are a lot of people around. Surveillance Mode sells for $248.44 as a stand-alone option, but can go for $75 when it's packaged with other options. If this system proves to be effective, it will most likely be made available to consumers in the near future.
