Classic Thanksgiving Side Dishes

WESTLAND, Mich.- It's not a complete Thanksgiving feast without those Classic Thanksgiving Side Dishes! Every family has a special twist that they put on their holiday meals, but almost every table will feature the Classic Thanksgiving Side Dishes: mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and green bean casserole!

We've gathered up some quick Classic Thanksgiving Side Dish Tips to help you prepare a delicious dinner:

Mashed Potatoes: For this classic use whole russet potatoes. Mash them with 1/2 to 1 stick of butter, 1 cup hot milk and salt and pepper. Add your own taste by experimenting with sour cream, yogurt, spices or herbs!

Stuffing: Always a classic, making stuffing by mixing melted the butter, diced celery and onions, sage, thyme, salt and pepper, and turkey or chicken broth, then simmer. In a separate bowl, mix eggs, parsley and stale bread cubes. Mix it all together, dump into a baking dish and baken until golden! As with all of these recipes, make it your own by adding apples, cranberries, walnuts or sausage!

Cranberry Sauce: This sweet classic side dish has a base of fresh cranberries and sugar. From there you can make it your own, add: orange juice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, orange zest, or brown sugar. Then cook, stirring until the cranberries pop!

Green Bean Casserole: This is a one dish classic! Mix together green beans, french fried onions, dash of pepper, splash of milk and some cream of mushroom soup. Then just pop it in the oven for less than 30 minutes! Top if off with some more onions for a crunch and you're done.

Tips For How To Cook A Turkey

WESTLAND, Mich.- There is no time to procrastinate, Thanksgiving is almost here! Yesterday the 1st Part of our Thanksgiving Series explained How To Thaw A Turkey Safely. Now, we present you with Tips For How To Cook A Turkey to help you brush up on the basics, and then you can add in your special touch or secret spice!

1. DON'T STUFF THE TURKEY- This is pretty straightforward, because this can be unsafe. It is hard for the stuffing to cook evenly inside the turkey, which means by the time the stuffing reaches a safe temperature, your turkey will probably be over cooked. Just spoon the stuffing into the turkey cavity after both are cooked if you're going for presentation.

2. SEASON ALL OVER- Don't go light on the seasonings. There's a lot of meat on a turkey, so remember inside, outside and under the skin. Rub butter or oil under the skin and on the outside for a moist and juicy turkey. Then be generous with your seasoning, and don't forget inside the cavity.

3. PREPARATION IS KEY- Tuck, tie, and cover. Pull the wing tips forward and tuck them under the breasts so your turkey sits straight and so they don't burn. After seasoning, tie the legs together with kitchen string or floss so it cooks evenly, and then use a loose piece of foil to cover the breasts for about 75% of the cooking time to keep the turkey moist.

4. LOW AND SLOW- Preheat your oven to 325 Degrees Fahrenheit and allot 15-20 minutes per pound. Putting about a 1/2 inch of water or stock in your roasting pan with some carrots, celery and onions will keep the oven moist and aromatic. Just make sure the thickest part of the thigh meat reaches 165 Degrees Fahrenheit!

5. LET IT BREATHE- Take your turkey our of the oven and allow about 20 minutes for it to rest, loosely covered with foil, so that the juices can redistribute. Don't worry about it getting cold, it will actually stay hot for over 40 minutes!

How To Thaw A Turkey Safely

WESTLAND, Mich.- Can you believe Thanksgiving is just one week away? Time to make your grocery list and prepare for the big feast! We've created a 3-Part Series of Posts to help you cook up a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner! Since the most important part of your Thanksgiving feast is the big turkey, the first part of this series is: How To Thaw A Turkey Safely!

Before you start cooking Thanksgiving dinner, make sure you have started thawing your turkey well in advance. The important part of thawing is making sure the turkey stays free from bacteria. Bacteria that could have been present before freezing, can become present and multiply rapidly if the turkey is not thawed properly. The recommended way to thaw a turkey is in the refrigerator. Just be aware that you must allot a full 24 hours of thawing time for each 4-5 pounds of turkey, so start early! After the turkey is thawed it can be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Another option for thawing your turkey is cold water thawing, which is less time consuming; taking only 30 minutes per pound. All you have to do is wrap the turkey in a leak-proof plastic bag and then submerge it into cold water. But, make sure you change the water every 30 minutes and then cook the turkey as soon as it is thawed.

Take all the candy and keep it out of site.  When your child asks for it, allow them only 1-2 pieces of candy, and no more. This makes sure that you avoid teaching the bad habit of bingeing.

Your kids have a right to go out trick-or-treating; it’s a part of childhood!  However, if you are concerned that maybe they have too much candy, try trading money or a toy for a quarter to half of their candy earnings.

Protect the Teeth

We all know that sugar isn’t good for teeth, so good dental hygiene is important especially the weeks following Halloween. Have your kids brush at least twice a day, and following their after-school snack. Tips for Pumpkin Carving

Tips for Pumpkin Carving:

-Draw or print it your design onto a piece of paper out to create a pattern, and then use a marker to trace the design onto the pumpkin.

-The first step is to clean the pumpkin out. Cut off the top, bottom, or try out the idea in the picture for more access. Avoid digging too deep into the bottom of the pumpkin when cleaning out the seeds because the pumpkin will become prone to rotting.

-When you're ready to start carving use a sharp knife and begin at the center of your design, working your way outward. Small details can be made with an X-Acto knife or the tip of a potato peeler.

- Mistakes on your jack-o-lantern can easily be mended by reattaching sections using a toothpicks to pin pieces back in place.

-When your carved pumpkin is complete, prolong its life by sealing in moisture by coating all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil.

- Pumpkin Display Tips: A small battery-operated flameless candle is a safer option than traditional candles for lighting your pumpkin. Also, sprinkling cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves on the underside of the pumpkin lid will give it a festive scent!

Things to NEVER Say to a Police Officer

If so, then you know it can be nerve-racking and even frustrating at times, but it's important to avoid saying things that could end up backfiring on you.  By using our list of Things To NEVER Say To A Police Officer you can save yourself some money while making the experience as least painful as possible!

Things to NEVER Say to a Police Officer:

“If I turn my car off, then I won’t be able to turn it on again.”: This excuse will not help you out at all, even if your car truly is in bad shape.  Saying this to a cop may cause for them to think that your vehicle could be unsafe to drive and therefore warrants another ticket.  It’s best just to do as they say and turn your vehicle off, following the officer's orders is the best route.

“I didn’t bring my I.D.”: This excuse is just a terrible idea since driving without a license is illegal and will warrant a hefty fine. But, if you’re a cyclist it's important to know that road rules apply to you too! If you are pulled over by an officer for a road violation, and you don't have your I.D. the officer will ticket you.

“Why don’t YOU tell me how fast I was going?”: Expressing your frustration through sarcasm will only irritate the officer and may lead them to issue you a harsher ticket.  Police officers are people just like you and I, they are simply performing their duty to society and would rather not deal with sarcastic comments.  These are, after all, the same people who would risk their lives to protect you if an emergency arose.

“There were several cars speeding, why didn’t you pull them over?”: Voicing your complaints about getting caught speeding when you believe other cars were speeding too will not help you win them over. Trying to divert the attention to others who were speeding will not help your case since speeding is illegal anyways.

“I don’t know how fast I was going.”:  Playing dumb is definitely not recommended. Police officers deal with people all day so they know when someone is being dishonest. Saying that you don’t know how fast you were going could also make you seem like an inattentive driver which could also land you a ticket. Honesty is always the best policy.

How To: Tips for Keeping your Vehicle in Shape on Rough Roads

However, if you must drive over a pothole, the best way to go about it is to accelerate over it so the weight of the car is shifted to the rear. Your natural reaction is to hit the breaks, but the entire weight of the car is then shifted to the front and can result in more damage. Don’t get any ideas…We aren’t condoning speeding or unsafe driving, but physics play a major role in this situation. By gently accelerating instead of breaking, you greatly reduce the opportunity for damage.

Another Tip for How To Keep your Vehicle in Shape on Rough Roads is to be aware of pooled water on the road. Not only can pooled water cause a potential hydroplaning situation, but they also can conceal large and dangerous potholes.
