Summer Car Care Tips

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– Vacation season is here, which means you'll be out and about a lot this summer! Making sure to take good care of your vehicle and to keep up on routine maintenance during the hot summer months can help you avoid the headache of car trouble on any trips, whether it's your commute to work or to somewhere out of state for vacation. Take advantage of our summer car care tips to protect your vehicle from sun and heat damage, keep you and your passengers comfortable, and to keep your car running well on the road!

Summer Car Care Tips

Check Your Air Conditioning System

On scorching summer days, you won't regret keeping your A/C system properly maintained! If your A/C system is letting out little to no air or it's not cooling your cabin as quick as it used to, it may be time to have your system inspected. In some cases, your vehicle's air filter may need replacing. Getting your air filter replaced can be extremely beneficial as it will help your fuel efficiency and remove any pollen in the filter which can affect any allergies you might have, making it difficult to breathe. You'll be thankful once you get it replaced when you're stuck in traffic on a humid day!
In other cases, not receiving cool air could mean a more serious problem with your radiator or cooling system. If you're experiencing this, make sure to have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible for the sake of your engine!

Get a Car Wash

Grime and dirt can build up over time on your vehicle and it can be difficult to pay attention to, especially when you're busy having fun all summer. Although it's an easy task to ignore, it's important to keep up on car washes! This excess grime and dirt on your vehicle can cause micro scratching on the paint, which can lead to unsightly rust on vehicle's exterior. Whether you give your car a wash at home or have it washed at the car wash, make sure to top it off with a wax to even further protect your vehicle's paint. If you choose to wash your car at home, use gentle materials and soap formulated for automotive purposes to avoid any abrasion to your car's exterior.

Park in the Shade

Whenever you get the opportunity, park in the shade! Your vehicle can heat up fairly quickly. Overtime, your vehicle's interior can become discolored and worn from UV rays, so regularly parking in the shade can help fight the aging process. The hot temperature can also wear down other components like tires, brake fluid, belts and hoses, and make them more susceptible to damage. As simple as it seems, parking in the shade will help to extend the life of your vehicle. Plus, you'll be thankful when you get back in your vehicle and it's not blazing hot.

Replace Your Coolant

One of the most important parts of your vehicle, engine coolant, is used to regulate the temperature of your engine. Whether it's cooling down a warm engine on a hot day or a cold day, engine coolant plays an important role of regulating temperature in your vehicle's regular running function. Because it gets much warmer in the summer, your engine is simply more susceptible to overheating if the coolant is leaking or needs replacing. Engine coolant is typically replaced every 30,000 miles, or at the specified interval in your owner's manual. If you aren't sure when it was last replaced, we'd be happy to take a look and recommend a service date.

Check Other Essential Fluids

Besides coolant, your other vehicle fluids should be replaced regularly to ensure your vehicle can withstand the heat and get you through all your summer adventures. Whether it's engine oil, wiper fluids, or brake fluid, each plays a very important role. Engine oil is usually replaced every 3,000-5,000 miles. Wiper fluid should be replaced as it's used to ensure you have enough liquid to clear your windshield. Brake fluid isn't something that needs replacing often, but it should be inspected if your brakes are feeling too soft or if it's taking you longer to complete a stop.

National Car Care Month - Tips for Taking Care of Your Engine

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Owning a car comes with many costs, and unfortunately, some of those costs can be unexpected. BUT, that doesn't mean you can't take actions to prevent some of these unexpected service costs. We're talking routine maintenance! Last week we discussed what you can do to maintain your tires, but this week we're going to provide you some tips for taking care of your engine - the most important part of your vehicle! Because there are many components that make up the engine, like spark plugs, pistons, crankshafts, etc., it can seem complicated. Maintaining the engine, however, is relatively simple.

National Car Care Month - Tips for Taking Care of Your Engine

ENGINE MAINTENANCE TIPS

Let's begin with oil changes. The #1 best thing you can do to keep your engine running smoothly is to get regular oil changes. While they're needed much more frequently that belt replacements, or other routine maintenance services, they're relatively inexpensive and do a world of good for your engine. What exactly does your oil do for your engine?

  • It removes heat from the engine
  • It absorbs debris to protect the engine
  • It lubricates the moving parts

Ignoring oil changes can lead to dark, gritty oil that can not only hurt your car's performance but put your engine at risk for overheating or premature wear. By not changing your oil frequently enough, you'll also build up engine sludge which isn't something that can be cleaned or removed without taking the engine apart (a very costly service). So, just be sure to keep a routine of getting an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles. If you forget when you last had an oil change, you can easily check the dipstick to see how it's doing. Alternatively, you can bring it in to our Service Center in Westland to have it inspected.

Another service you can have completed with your oil changes that will help keep your engine clean is filter replacements! You should have an oil filter replacement at every service and have your air filter inspected. Why the oil filter at EVERY service? It filters the oil and prevents debris from getting into it! It also allows oil to flow freely to your engine, so with a blocked-up filter, you could risk engine failure or decreased fuel economy.

Depending on the condition of the road or air that you're traveling through, your air filter might need to be replaced at every oil change, or it might. It should, however, be inspected at each oil change to make sure it's able to handle the air. Why is this important? Your engine requires air to run! The air intake mixes it with fuel to make your car go, so ensuring your car is able to take in air the way it needs to is essential to a well running vehicle.

Lastly, your coolant. This is a fluid, otherwise known as antifreeze that rotates through your radiator hoses and cools your engine. If your engine were to overheat, it would warp and not function properly, so coolant and your radiator hoses are a powerful thing. All you have to do is keep an eye on the level of your coolant, and have it changed or "flushed"every 40,000 miles. If you happen to see a decrease, or even a spot of bright colors as a puddle underneath your vehicle, it's time to have it checked out right away! The techs at North Brothers will take a look at your radiator for any cracks or damage and make sure it's completely safe to be back on the road before you leave our dealership.

If you're due for an oil and filter change, air filter replacement, or coolant inspection, the team at North Brothers is here to help! We want to assist in maintaining your engine during National Car Care Month and keep your car running well. You can find more tips and tricks for taking care of your vehicle on our website and our blog. Stop by our dealership on Ford Road for any auto service you need and we'd be happy to help. You can also schedule an appointment to save time!

10 Basic Ways to Care for Your Pet

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Love Your Pet Day is on February 20th! Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, bunny, lizard, or otherwise, it's important to care for them each and every day. Regardless of their size or value, they deserve to be treated with love and respect just as you would like to be treated. To begin, take a moment to remember why you invited your pet into your home in the first place! See the 10 basic ways to care for your pet below and improve your pet ownership skills to provide your furry, feather, and scaled friends the best possible life.

10 Basic Ways to Care for Your Pet

1. Spend Time with Them/ Pay Attention to Them

This should be an obvious tip because you likely bought or adopted your pet for companionship! Just remember that you're their caretaker and one of the most important parts of their lives. Show them that you care and make time exclusively for them! Do activities that they like to do, get excited to see them when you come home, talk to them, pet them if they like to be pet, etc. Make them feel special!

2. Don't Skip Vet Visits

Most pets, especially cats and dogs, require vaccinations and regular veterinary care. The cost of a vet visit can seem expensive, but it's worth it in the long run for their health and well-being. Plus, a vet is trained to identify and provide expert advice or prescription medicine if your pet is having any issues. It's better to take preventative care than to deal with an emergency situation!

3. Buy High Quality Food

Again, a higher quality food can seem expensive, but it is a cost worth taking a look a second look at. Spending a few to $10 more on your pet's food per month can make a world of difference to their health. Think of it in relation to your car's oil - you wouldn't want to put watered down oil into your engine, so why give your pet Do some research, or ask your vet, what works best for your pet's specie and breed.

4. Provide Cool, Fresh Water All the Time

You should already know the absolute basics are necessary to keep your pet alive. You may be concerned that they're drinking too much water, or might have an accident if they have constant access to water. They're usually unable to provide themselves a refreshment, so make sure they have access to fresh water at all times.

5. Make Their Environment Comfortable

Know your pet, know their stressors, and know their comforts. You're able to make your home or environment comfortable for yourself, but again, they're unable to do that for themselves. Offer them a safe space if they're nervous, provide them comfortable materials to rest with, and give them proper shelter if they like to stay outside.

6. Clean/Bathe and Groom Them As Necessary

Not every pet needs regular bathing, but most need some sort of grooming or tools so they can groom themselves. Making sure their nails, teeth, and hair are taken care of is actually important to their health and can help to prevent any mishaps. Educate yourself or talk to your vet about what you should be doing, and if need be, bring them to a professional groomer who knows what they're doing!

7. Provide Them Ways to Have Fun

Just like you, your pets want to have fun and have energy they need to get out, even if they only want to do so at night. You can offer them safe, pet-approved toys to play with together or alone, give them space to exercise, or take them out to interact with other animals or people. It all depends on the pet, so be mindful that not every pet will enjoy the things you want to do.

8. Respect Their Boundaries

Some pets don't like to be touched on their head, others don't really like to be held, and some are scared of certain things. You wouldn't like it if someone put you in a stressful situation, so avoid putting your pet in one just for your enjoyment. Respect their physical boundaries and allow them to determine what feels best to them.

9. Be Patient with Them

If you've ever caught yourself yelling at your dog for jumping on you when you walk in the door, take a moment to remember that they're very excited to see you and have their own unique way of expressing that! You can train your pets to curb these "bad" behaviors, but it's up to you to be patient with them through the process and consistent in your practice. They hear, see, and learn much differently than we do. Do some research on behavior, or consult a trainer for more information on your pet's breed.

10. Make Your Home Safe

Most importantly, make your home safe for your pet to be in! You might know how to avoid licking a strange puddle on the floor, but your pet might not. Keep clutter picked up, store poisonous plants or cleaning supplies away from reach, etc. Know what's dangerous for your pets, and tailor your home to meet their needs. They're family, too, and you want them to be safe!

We hope these 10 basic ways to care for your pet remind you how to make them happy, healthy, and comfortable. We love our pets like they're family, and the same goes for our team at North Brothers Ford! Winter Road Trip Tips

Winter Road Trip Tips

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Despite the great feeling of staying inside, being wrapped up like a burrito in a fuzzy blanket, and having Netflix on the TV, there are things to be done that require a little travel. Whether you're taking a shorter trip to a relatives house an hour away, or a grand trip out west to do some serious skiing/boarding, there are some things you should do to prepare. The cold weather and snowy roads can make it harder to travel, and there is a higher risk of accident, but some simple inspections and maintenance services can do the job to keep you and your passengers safe. See our winter road trip tips below, and let us know if there's any way we can help!

1. Inspect your tire's inflation level. If they don't meet the requirements on the sticker inside your driver's door, fill them up accordingly.

2. Make sure you have your spare tire ready to go & the proper supplies to change it if need be.

3. Check your oil. If it's low or looking dark and gritty, get it changed BEFORE you go. Even if it's good, you'll want to consider how many miles it has been since you've had it changed, and how many miles your trip will be.

4. Pack supplies for emergencies and bad weather:
-Extra gloves, hats, sock, and other warm clothing
-Hot packs for your hands or feet
   -A flashlight & multi-tool
-An ice scraper and snow brush
   -Jumper cables
   -Extra windshield wiper fluid
   -An extra cell phone charger
   -Extra cash

5. Pack supplies for you and your passengers:
-Tissues and hand wipes or sanitizers
   -A bag for trash
-A first aid kit & necessary medications
   -Water, beverages, and snacks

Live a Happier Life in 2018 - Buy a Sports Car

Live a Happier Life in 2018 - Buy a Sports Car

WESTLAND, Mich.,––It's no secret that having feel good moments is good for your health. Ford recently took this to the lab, so to speak. They ran a study that measured what they call "buzz moments", or moments that we would describe as thrilling because they can have such an impact on our overall wellbeing. What Ford found through this study is that if you want to live a happier life in 2018, buy a sports car. Here's what they did and what they found:

Researchers put some of the most thrilling moments to the test by hooking up their volunteer study participants with medical grade technology that would monitor their heart rate and emotional response. The activities they monitored their volunteers included: riding a rollercoaster, engaging in a passionate kiss, salsa dancing with a partner, shopping, watching HBO's Game of Thrones, fine dining out, watching football, and driving a car. They recorded the number of times the participants had a "buzz moment" throughout these activities and took the average of each to determine the winner.

As you can see above, riding a rollercoaster produced the most "buzz moments", but driving a car, particularly a performance-based Ford Focus RS came close. Ford also took into consideration how realistic it was to regularly have these moments, and driving a thrilling car was clearly the best way to get the most buzz in your everyday life.

“A roller coaster may be good for a quick thrill, but it’s not great for getting you to work every day,” said Dr Harry Witchel, Discipline Leader in Physiology. “This study shows how driving a performance car does much more than get you from A to B – it could be a valuable part of your daily wellbeing routine.”

As a part of their study, they outfitted a Ford Focus RS with a high-performance Zotac VR GO gaming PC, 82 display panels, and 110 x 500-lumen daylight bright light strips, as well as a real-time emotional AI system that would display the driver's emotions on the exterior of the vehicle. This is just a small experiment in the bigger picture of the future of vehicle and driver integration. The experts at the Ford Research and Innovation Center in Aachen, Germany are looking into how in-car systems can be aware of the driver's emotions, distress, distractions, and fatigue to provide warnings or prompts. The future of these systems might even come with the capability of taking control in emergency situations.

3 Simple Tips for Taking Care of Your Car in the Winter

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– The cold temperatures, the ice and snow, and the road salt can take a toll on your car in the Winter season. Your battery can struggle to start the car, your oil can move like molasses through your engine, and the road salt can eat away at your car's exposed metal components, etc. This can not only cause your car trouble running regularly in the Winter, but can age your car prematurely. While it's cold and easy to get away with being lazy, we want to give you a few easy tips that you can follow that your car will really benefit from. Here are our 3 simple tips for taking care of your car in the Winter:

3 Simple Tips for Taking Care of Your Car in the Winter

1. Take it through the car wash once a week. This is a simple thing to do, but it can provide your car's paint and external components the TLC it needs during the Winter. In Michigan, we regularly salt or sand the roads, which is great for reducing slippery spots and making the roads safer. However, this salt and sand can cause corrosion on the underside of your vehicle and can scratch your paint. Getting your car washed will take off all that salt residue and condition your paint. Make sure to pick a wash package with wax included and keep your eyes open for unlimited monthly packages some carwashes offer so you can go often for a discounted price.

3 Simple Tips for Taking Care of Your Car in the Winter

2. Have your oil changed at the regular 3,000-5,000 mile recommendation & have your battery tested. The really cold weather like we've recently experienced can make it that much harder for your battery to start your car and for your oil to remain viscous enough to move around the engine. So, if your battery isn't in good condition or your oil is bogged down with debris, your car will struggle to start and to warm up. Having old oil run through your engine isn't good in any weather, so just keep up with regular oil changes. When you're in for an oil change, ask for your battery to be tested so you know how it's performing. Batteries should only need to be replaced every 2-5 years depending on use.

3 Simple Tips for Taking Care of Your Car in the Winter

3. Check the inflation of your tires every few weeks. With the temperature changing so often, so can the inflation level of your tires! Having the safest tires to run on means having them properly inflated and rotated. Having the best kind of tires for the weather helps, too. Even if you only have all-season tires for Winter, it's still valuable to keep them properly inflated. You can check with a gauge at home or have us at North Brothers check for you. Just by driving your car over our specialized tread machine, we'll be able to tell you concerning spots of wear on each tire, the inflation level of each tire, and more.

We hope these 3 simple tips are easy enough to follow, so you can take the best care of your car even in the cold Michigan weather. Please let our wonderful, knowledgeable, and experienced technicians know if there's any way we can help keep your car running great. The Service Department at North Brothers Ford is not only equipped with a great team of technicians, but advanced technology so you can be sure we'll do the job right on your Ford vehicle!
