Ford Ranks the Highest in Initial Quality by J.D. Power in 31 Years

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– For the past 31 years, the global marketing research giant, J.D. Power, has been conducting a study on consumer vehicles called the Initial Quality Study (IQS). The ratings for this year's study were released and Ford now ranks the highest it has ever ranked in Initial Quality by J.D. Power in 31 years. With various category improvements and two top ten quality vehicles, Ford achieved the #2 spot.

This study is conducted each year using about 80,000 new vehicle owners, 33 brands, and various models from each brand. The study collects data and feedback from new car owners within the first 90 days of ownership, hence the name "Initial Quality". The data comes from over 200 vehicle parameters, so what helped Ford make the #2 spot in the non-premium category?

1. Ford improved greatly in the vehicle problem category. Each of the 33 brands in the study are analyzed by how many problems were had per 100 vehicles. Last year, Ford received 102 problems per 100 vehicles. This year, Ford leaped down to 86 problems per 100 vehicles. The Big 3 outperformed imports in this category for the second year in a row.

2. Ford continues to offer better infotainment and technology. Ford's SYNC infotainment and communication system was a big part of this study, as were other brand's infotainment systems. In fact, the audio/communication/entertainment/navigation category was the most improved industry wide from 2016 to 2017. To improve the user experience further, Ford is working to upgrade 70% of vehicles to SYNC 3, which is vastly improved from previous versions.

3. Ford had two vehicles make the top ten highest ranked vehicles list out of 24 total. The 2017 Ford Expedition ranked #9 and the 2017 Ford Mustang ranked #10 in initial quality. Although they didn't receive big upgrades this year in terms of design or engines, they will both receive a significant refresh for the 2018 model year.
