I Was In An Accident, What Do I Do Now?

WESTLAND, Mich. -- Accidents. They happen to the best of us. In the shock of the moment, it can be difficult to gather your thoughts and do what you need to do to and recover, but that's why North Brothers Ford is here! While a lot of drivers may not think of the possibility of a major collision, it's important to have a game plan just in case. We hope you never have to use it, but here are some things you should know if you're involved in a car accident.

EXCHANGE INFORMATION

When you've determined that everyone else involved in the accident is okay, you should exchange information. In most cases, this includes license numbers, vehicle registration, and insurance info. Make sure you do not leave the scene of the accident until you've gathered everything you need to file a claim with your insurance company.

GET A POLICE REPORT

Once you've gathered information from all drivers involved in the accident, call the police so they can document the incident, and call an ambulance if needed. Getting a police report is important for insurance purposes. Make sure to point out any damage to your car to the responding officer, and make a personal note of their name as well as the report number.

TAKE PHOTOS

When you're in an accident, taking photos of vehicle and property damage as well as personal injuries can mean the difference between a successful and unsuccessful insurance claim. Memory is notoriously unreliable, and having documented evidence can help build a strong case to get you the full compensation to which you're entitled.

SCHEDULE A COLLISION APPOINTMENT

Once everything is said and done, schedule a collision service appointment with North Brothers Ford! If you haven't already contacted your insurance company, we can make the call together. While your vehicle is in our shop, we can also help you make arrangements to get a rental car. No job is too big for us, and we're committed to getting you up and running and back on the road!

While North Brothers Ford hopes you never have to use this information, it's still important to know what to do in the event of an accident. Exchanging information, getting a police report, and taking photos are all crucial to getting the compensation you deserve. In the shock of the moment, it can be difficult to calm your nerves and take care of business, but it is essential.

What to Do in the Event of an Accident

Don't Leave the Scene

If you get into an accident, it's very important that you stay at the scene until you're positive you have all of the information you need in order to file an insurance claim. You'll need to exchange your license plate number, insurance information, and vehicle registration with anyone else involved. After you do this, make sure you call 911 so the police can document a report or provide any emergency help needed. If you aren't sure about what to do after that, ask the police officer for any further questions, as they will be able to directly help with the situation!

File an Insurance Claim

The next thing you'll need to do is file your insurance claim. In order to do this, you'll need three pieces of proof to move forward. First, you'll need to get the police report, which can be obtained from the officer or from the police station. While you are on the site of the accident, make sure you obtain the insurance information, license plate number, and vehicle registration from any parties involved. Finally, any additional information, like information or testimonials from witnesses, will help to further your case while applying for an insurance claim. Once you have all of these pieces, call your insurance company and make sure you write down the claim number - you'll need it!

Schedule Your Collision Appointment

After you've obtained all of the pieces of proof needed for your insurance claim along with your claim number, schedule your collision appointment with North Brothers Ford to get your vehicle looked at as soon as possible. Tips For Driving Safely Around Deer

WESTLAND, Mich.––In Michigan, it's easy to look around and see all sorts of live nature, including animals. Even in the suburbs it's not hard to find animals of all kinds, including deer. While they're interesting to watch from your window, they can be dangerous, especially on the side of the road. This time of year is prime for deer and vehicle collisions in Michigan. In fact, Michigan is at high-risk, according to Statefarm, for collision with deer. We're here to provide you some tips for driving safely around deer!

Tips For Driving Safely Around Deer

Understanding deer is a difficult, and many times we don't know what action they'll take when you encounter them. Why they run out onto the road or why they stand and stare blankly at your headlights can seem like a mystery, but there are some general rules of thumb you can follow.

-Deer breed October through January each year and are most active during this time. This is when deer and vehicle collision chances are most high, so keep this in mind when you're on the move this fall and winter.

-Deer typically hangout around open fields and wooded areas, but may come through to the suburbs or close to the road to forage for food.

-Deer are most active during dawn and dusk. This makes them hard to see, so pay extra attention.

-Deer tend to fixate on bright lights. If you encounter one on the road who's blankly staring and not moving, flick your high beams on and off to grab their attention and hopefully scare them off.

-Deer always travel in herds and very rarely alone, so if you see one, you can expect there to be others around. It's important to slow down even if the one you saw ran away.

We want you to stay safe all year long on the road and hope these tips for driving safely around deer help you do so. Unfortunately collisions do happen with deer. In fact, it's better to hit the deer than to swerve and risk worse injuries. If you experience a collision with a deer, you can feel a slight peace of mind bringing your car to our North Brothers Collision Center because we work with all major insurance companies, have excellent expert auto technicians, and use state of the art equipment.
