Great Local Organizations Worth Donating to This Season

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Christmas is only 3 days away! Can you believe it? If you're feeling in the spirit of the season, consider giving to not just your family and friends but to the community as well, as long as you're able. By providing a little gift to organizations, companies, and people who consistently support our Westland/Wayne community, you'll be helping to make it a better place to live. There are lots of people out there right here in our community who need your help, but where can you make a donation? Here are some great local organizations worth donating to this season:

Wayne County Family Center The Family Center in our neighboring Wayne County offers transitional shelter for homeless families along with other services including easy access to the SMART bus line, a laundry room, three balanced meals and snacks during the day, licensed child care for preschoolers, job counseling and placement, case management, financial planning, a medical clinic, and most importantly, help finding a home! This organization allow the families in our area to live a semi normal life while they work towards permanent placement. We make a donation to the Wayne County Family Center from our Annual Golf Outing proceeds each year. Consider making your own donation this Holiday season. 

Westland Youth Assistance The Youth Assistance Program offers assessment meetings, drug screening, free academic enrichment, mentoring, drug screening, recreational activities, guest speaker presentations, life choices classes, and other services for ages 9-16 from Westland. These children are referred by Police, Courts, Schools, Parents/Guardians, and other agencies for the services listed above that are geared towards providing a healthy and successful life. We provide funding for this program along with other great organizations, and hope you will make a donation this season! 

Starfish Family Services This organization stretches across metropolitan Detroit, with a location in Westland, Inkster, Livonia, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and Redford. Starfish Family Services offers plenty head start or preschool programs, youth programs, parenting programs, preschool, finance services, counseling and health services, community programs, and a shelter & crisis center. All these programs offer people the resources to be well supported role models, and outstanding citizens all while having a little fun. Their goal is to provide the children of our communities a brighter future and you can contribute a little to make this happen! 

Angels' Place of Oakland County Angels' Place provides people-centered services like housing, enrichment programs and outings, and professional support for adults with developmental disabilities, or primarily intellectual disabilities. This organization hosts 20 homes in Metro Detroit (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County) and usually provides care for the rest of these adults' lives. All of Angels' Place operations is funded by fundraisers, social security & Community Mental Health Funding, and donations. The organization is responsible for about 35% of operating costs and it takes on average $62,000+ per resident per year for support. We hope you'll consider donating this season - and make sure to check out their merchant supporters where you can shop to donate all year long.  

P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue This non-profit, all-breed, rescue organization saves and hosts many abandoned or rescued dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from Michigan and Ohio throughout the year through their foster homes. They often host events for adoption throughout Metro Detroit, and have partnered with North Brothers Ford in the past. P.O.E.T. regularly needs food and pet supplies to support each animal waiting for adoption and if you're a pet owner, you know this can be expensive! Help this organization keep these animals happy and healthy this season and throw them a bone or two by donating online! 

There are many other organizations in the Westland and Wayne area that we didn't mention above that need your help. These organizations require donations to continue doing what they do in supporting the people, and animals, of our community not just during the holiday season, but all year long. Classic Movies to Watch for the Holidays

WESTLAND, Mich.,––The Holidays are here, there's plenty of snow on the ground, and Christmas is just 10 days away! A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

"Sam the snowman tells us the story of a young red-nosed reindeer who, after being ousted from the reindeer games because of his beaming honker, teams up with Hermey, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, the prospector. They run into the Abominable Snowman and find a whole island of misfit toys. Rudolph vows to see if he can get Santa to help the toys, and he goes back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. But Santa's sleigh is fogged in. But when Santa looks over Rudolph, he gets a very bright idea..."

A Christmas Story (1983) 

"Christmas is approaching and 9 year-old Ralphie wants only one thing: a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun. When he mentions it at the dinner table, his mother's immediate reaction is that he'll shoot his eye out. He then decides on a perfect theme for his teacher but her reaction is like his. He fantasizes about what it would be like to be Red Ryder and catch the bad guys. When the big day arrives he gets lots of present under the tree including a lovely gift from his aunt that his mother just adores. But what about the BB gun?"

Die Hard (1988) 

This might be a stretch for some, but for Diehard fans, this is absolutely a Christmas movie! However, we recommend it for adults only. 

"NYPD cop John McClane goes on a Christmas vacation to visit his wife Holly in Los Angeles where she works for the Nakatomi Corporation. While they are at the Nakatomi headquarters for a Christmas party, a group of bank robbers led by Hans Gruber take control of the building and hold everyone hostage, with the exception of John, while they plan to perform a lucrative heist. Unable to escape and with no immediate police response, John is forced to take matters into his own hands"

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

"It's Christmas time and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen and their two kids. Clark's continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon."

The Santa Clause (1994)

"Divorcee Scott Calvin is disgusted to learn that his ex and her husband have tried - and failed - to break it easy to their 6-year-old son Charlie that Santa isn't real. On Christmas Eve, Scott reads The Night Before Christmas... then receives an unexpected visitor on his roof. When he's startled by Scott's calling out and falls, the Santa impersonator disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on. Scott does, and is transported around the town dropping gifts through chimneys until he's taken to the North Pole and informed by a group who claim they're elves that he is now Santa. Elf (2003) 

"Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa's sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Hobbs, on Santa's naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter's relationship with Buddy interferes with his job, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities."

The Polar Express (2004)

Best Places to See Christmas Lights in Metro Detroit

WESTLAND, Mich.,––It's the most wonderful time of the year! The weather has finally cooled down, we're expecting snow, and most importantly, the Holiday season is here. Christmas is just around the corner and one of many beloved traditions includes viewing all the exciting lights! There are neighborhoods, homes, and places we know to be the best for the lights, so without further ado, here are the best places to see Christmas lights in Metro Detroit:

Hines Drive Lights

This 4.5 mile stretch of Hines Drive, that goes right through Westland, is packed with interesting Holiday lights that you can see from the warmth of your car! Cars can enter for just $5, or with a new un-wrapped toy on December 2nd, 9th, or 16th. Toys collected on these Tuesdays will be donated to the Wayne County Family Center - what's better than giving back locally this time of year?! The road is open Monday-Thursday 7pm-10pm and Friday-Sunday 6pm-10pm. You can enter in Westland at Merriman Road north of Warren Road.

Greenfield Village Holiday Nights 

Greenfield Village is not only host to 80 acres of history, but to a Holiday event that occurs on its main street on special nights in December. Their Holiday Night events take place in any weather and include Santa and live reindeer, fireworks, ice skating, rides in historic Model Ts and horse-drawn wagons, and lots of lights! Livonia Lights

At 34836 Bridge St. in Livonia, one home will showcase about 60,000 lights and a large tree that syncs up to Christmas music. All you have to do is show up in your car now through January 1st (Sunday-Thursday 5:30pm-10pm or Friday/Saturday till 11pm) and tune your radio to get the full experience. There are a few other homes in Metro Detroit that do this including 2651 Cherokee Hills Cir. in Waterford, 439 Shady Oaks in Lake Orion, and 3111 Paramount Lane in Auburn Hills - so take your pick!

Campus Martius Park 

Likely one of the biggest trees you can see this season in Detroit is right in the heart of downtown at Campus Martius Park! There you'll also find plenty of lights all around the ice skating rink, plus great shops and restaurants to enjoy. The family-friendly skating rink is open seven days a week through the Holidays, and Santa will even be making visits! See the Campus Martius schedule online for more information. 

Detroit Zoo Wild Lights 

The Wild Lights show take place at the Detroit Zoo in Royal oak each year! This year, you can visit on weekends throughout the end of December to walk through the zoo and see large light displays like the photo above. This is a popular event, so ticket pricing varies by hour and day (ranging $10-$16). There will also be visits from Santa, carousel rides, and a Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer 4-D experience for an extra cost. See the schedule and the price breakdown on the Detroit Zoo website. 

Downtown Rochester Big Bright Light Show

The entire stretch of main street in downtown Rochester is covered in lights, and we mean that literally! Each individual building is decked out in strings of Christmas lights. It's a further drive from Westland, but well worth the trip this Holiday season. Be sure to grab a nice dinner, do a little shopping, and take a stroll under the lights everyday after dusk now through January 7th.

8 Turkey Tips to Cook the Best Bird on Thanksgiving

WESTLAND, Mich. –– The cooking of a Thanksgiving turkey is considered an art form of which your dinner guests serve as the critics. This makes loading a bird into an oven a more daunting task than it should be, not to mention turkeys are easy to dry out or undercook. To combat the stress of preparing a palatable meal for your family and friends this November, check out these eight turkey tips to cook the best bird on Thanksgiving, and we guarantee you'll please the pickiest of eaters.

1. Decide what the right size turkey is for your party. 

If you're hosting a large gathering, you'll probably need a 20-pound bird to satisfy their Thanksgiving appetites. A good way to estimate the size of the turkey you'll need is to assume every person at your party will eat about 1 1/2 pounds of turkey, including the bones and giblets.

2. Properly defrost your turkey. 

It's recommended you thaw your turkey in the refrigerator to stifle the growth of harmful bacteria. Place the turkey breast-side-up onto a rimmed baking sheet and place it in your fridge. Allow a full day of thawing for every four pounds of turkey.

3. Properly clean your turkey.

Remove the giblets and save them for gravy stock. Rinse the turkey under cool running water and dry it, inside and out, with paper towels. Make sure your turkey is completely dry.

4. Cook your turkey in a stainless steel roasting pan. 

Stainless steel roasting pans distribute heat more evenly, and they last a lifetime. It's best to use a rectangular roasting pan with medium height sides and strong handles to contain the size and weight of your turkey.

5. Don't stuff your turkey.  

When you stuff a moist turkey, you run the risk of harmful bacteria growing on your food if your turkey or stuff is undercooked. Instead, consider breaking tradition and cooking your stuffing in a separate dish.

6. If you do stuff your turkey, do it like this.

Make sure to stuff your turkey right before it goes in the oven as opposed to stuff it ahead of time. Stuffing expands as it cooks, so fill the turkey's cavity loosely. A 12–15-pound turkey takes about 10 cups of stuffing, while a 15–20-pound turkey can hold up to 12 cups.

7. Don't overcook or undercook your turkey. 

To avoid overcooking or undercooking your turkey, set it on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. After the first hour, regularly baste the turkey with pan drippings so that the meat stays moist and browns evenly. Roast your turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

8. Let your turkey rest after it cooks.

When your turkey is done, gently tent your turkey with aluminum foil and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to absorb the pan juices and what you basted it in.

Summer Driving Safety Tips

WESTLAND, Mich. - Each time summer rolls around, many can't wait to experience driving with the windows down and the wind in your hair. As summer is usually associated with nice weather, nobody tends to think about the dangers of driving during these warm months. In fact, according to Ford Motor Company, a new survey showed that many parents and teens believe the winter months to be the season with the most accidents - especially for teen drivers. This is, in fact, not true, as summer has revealed to have the highest number of teen driver fatalities.

While it is a combination of multiple factors, the survey seemed to suggest that this is because many drivers speed because of nice driving conditions; there are more distractions such as loud music and friends; and safe driving habits are not enforced. Knowing that it is important to be safe, no matter the season, we have a few summer driving safety tips:

Be Aware of Holidays
Did you know that July 4th is the deadliest day of the year to drive? With so many people traveling to be with friends and family, be aware that there will be a large amount of people on a small stretch of highway. If you can't avoid the highway, be vigilant and aware of those around you. By practicing safe driving habits, the holiday can be a safe and happy one for all.

Prep Your Car
The summer heat takes a toll on all vehicles, so make sure to check your fluids and listen for any abnormal sounds.  If you have any questions or concerns, or simply need help maintaining your car, we can assist you at North Brothers Ford.

Limit Your Distractions
It's easy to be distracted during the summer since it's so tempting to roll the windows down, blare the music and have fun with your passengers. It's okay to have fun, but limit your distractions by having a passenger adjust the radio, navigate GPS, make phone calls, text, etc. Let your passengers assist you with the distractions, while you focus on getting to your destination safely.

Don't Speed
Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination so you aren't tempted to speed. During the winter, we're used to accounting for weather conditions to make sure we arrive safely and on time. But give yourself time during the summer too, and make sure that you're obeying all traffic laws too.

Buckle Up
This is possibly one of the most important safety tips we could give you, as buckling up is so important - and against the law if you don't! Statistics show that seat belt usage is lowest among teenagers, even though seat belts are the number 1 life-saving device in accidents.

Summer is a great time of year, especially after spending anywhere from 5-8 months in dreaded Michigan winter. By following these summer driving safety tips, you can ensure the safety of you, your passengers and your fellow drivers.
