National Car Care Month - Tires

WESTLAND, Mich.–– During National Car Care Month, it's the perfect time to get your tires serviced so that you're ready to hit the road this spring. Tire care is one of the most important parts of owning a vehicle, as tires are the safety buffer between you and the road. It's crucial that your vehicle has adequate tire tread, properly rotated tires, and accurate tire inflation all year round. 4. New Tires
Did you put on snow tires for the winter season? It's time to take them off! It's best to change back to all-season tires this spring. Winter tires are only built to handle 45 degrees Fahrenheit and under. If your tire tread is worn down, it's time for you to get a new set! We recommend replacing all four tires at the same time. It's filled with down, rated for -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and waterproof, so it's a great investment with or without the sale price.

These are quite pricey for a pair of gloves, but again, will last you for many winters to come. You can get these Leather IL Solo gloves in black or "elk".

We chose a slightly more affordable glove option from North Face that we think is worth the $45. These gloves come in a wide variety of colors and sizes to fit all hands. They're stretchy, flexible, relatively lightweight, machine washable, and have an "Etip" that allows you to use your smartphone's touch screen with them on. They are described as "breathable" so if you need something warmer for longer periods of time outdoors, try the Women's Denali Thermal gloves.

One of the highest rated winter hats is this one from, again, North Face! This will cost you about $30 and only comes in three color options. It's slightly vintage and very cozy looking, so if you can find a jacket to match, this is a great investment. One of the best things about this hat, though, is the fleece ear band on the inside. This will help your ears stay warm, and eliminate some of that annoying itch that comes with wool and other knit hats.

Great Local Organizations Worth Donating to This Season

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Christmas is only 3 days away! Can you believe it? If you're feeling in the spirit of the season, consider giving to not just your family and friends but to the community as well, as long as you're able. By providing a little gift to organizations, companies, and people who consistently support our Westland/Wayne community, you'll be helping to make it a better place to live. There are lots of people out there right here in our community who need your help, but where can you make a donation? Here are some great local organizations worth donating to this season:

Wayne County Family Center The Family Center in our neighboring Wayne County offers transitional shelter for homeless families along with other services including easy access to the SMART bus line, a laundry room, three balanced meals and snacks during the day, licensed child care for preschoolers, job counseling and placement, case management, financial planning, a medical clinic, and most importantly, help finding a home! This organization allow the families in our area to live a semi normal life while they work towards permanent placement. We make a donation to the Wayne County Family Center from our Annual Golf Outing proceeds each year. Consider making your own donation this Holiday season. 

Westland Youth Assistance The Youth Assistance Program offers assessment meetings, drug screening, free academic enrichment, mentoring, drug screening, recreational activities, guest speaker presentations, life choices classes, and other services for ages 9-16 from Westland. These children are referred by Police, Courts, Schools, Parents/Guardians, and other agencies for the services listed above that are geared towards providing a healthy and successful life. We provide funding for this program along with other great organizations, and hope you will make a donation this season! 

Starfish Family Services This organization stretches across metropolitan Detroit, with a location in Westland, Inkster, Livonia, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and Redford. Starfish Family Services offers plenty head start or preschool programs, youth programs, parenting programs, preschool, finance services, counseling and health services, community programs, and a shelter & crisis center. All these programs offer people the resources to be well supported role models, and outstanding citizens all while having a little fun. Their goal is to provide the children of our communities a brighter future and you can contribute a little to make this happen! 

Angels' Place of Oakland County Angels' Place provides people-centered services like housing, enrichment programs and outings, and professional support for adults with developmental disabilities, or primarily intellectual disabilities. This organization hosts 20 homes in Metro Detroit (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County) and usually provides care for the rest of these adults' lives. All of Angels' Place operations is funded by fundraisers, social security & Community Mental Health Funding, and donations. The organization is responsible for about 35% of operating costs and it takes on average $62,000+ per resident per year for support. We hope you'll consider donating this season - and make sure to check out their merchant supporters where you can shop to donate all year long.  

P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue This non-profit, all-breed, rescue organization saves and hosts many abandoned or rescued dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from Michigan and Ohio throughout the year through their foster homes. They often host events for adoption throughout Metro Detroit, and have partnered with North Brothers Ford in the past. P.O.E.T. regularly needs food and pet supplies to support each animal waiting for adoption and if you're a pet owner, you know this can be expensive! Help this organization keep these animals happy and healthy this season and throw them a bone or two by donating online!

Ford Increases Off-Road Capabilities With 2018 Expedition

WESTLAND, Mich.–– For those that seek adventure, the 2018 Expedition has the answer. For the upcoming year, Ford increases its off-road capabilities with the 2018 Expedition and its variety of features. More than 20% of current Expedition drivers use their SUV for off-road adventures - the FX4 package was designed with this group specifically in mind. This new, full-sized SUV is built on an aluminum alloy body that is 300 lbs lighter than its previous counterpart. The FX4 package comes equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that will generate 375 horsepower, and over 470 lbs of torque. One of the most iconic features of the Expedition's FX4 package is its 9,300 lb towing capacity. From campers to boats, the adventure is in your hands. How to Care for Your Tires This Spring

WESTLAND, Mich.,––It's Spring in Michigan, and that means the roads will be wet, messy, and full of potholes. Because your tires are what connect you to the road, they're pretty important and worthy of your routine care. There are a few easy things you can do this season to ensure your safety on the road, your car's efficiency, and help you avoid the pain of tire repair. Here's how to care for your tires this Spring:

1. Inspect your tires tread wear

There are no special tools needed to inspect your tires wear. Your eyes will work just fine. Taking a look every few weeks or so for damage, cracking, under inflation, and uneven tread wear is the easiest way to tell if your tires need care! For an easy way to check tread wear, try the penny method! If by sticking your penny in upside down in your tire's tread you can see all of Abraham Lincoln's head, it's time to get new tires.

2. Check your tires air pressure

Checking your tires air pressure is typically done with a tire gauge which measures in PSI (pounds per square inch of air pressure). Having properly inflated tires can help you achieve good fuel economy and extend the life of your tires. If your tires are under inflated, your car will have to work harder to move which means you'll be spending more on gas. You can find the recommended tire pressure on the sticker on the inside of the driver's door, or in your Owner's Manual. As temperatures fluctuate throughout the year, the air outside can affect your tire's air pressure. It's best to check your tires in the morning at least once per month for the most accurate reading.

3. Have your tires balanced and rotated regularly

Another routine maintenance task to help you achieve best fuel economy and extended tire life is rotating them! This is a tire service that should be done every 5,000-7,000 miles or for most people about every other oil change. Tires can wear differently depending on their location, rotating them regularly will help cut down on uneven tread wear so they are all on the same page, so to speak. Having your tires balanced will also help to minimize uneven or premature wear.

4. Keep your car's load weight in mind

While your tires hold the entire weight of your vehicle, they can only hold a certain amount of excess weight. Excessive weight on or in your vehicle can lead to weaker tires and possible damage. We recommend not overloading past your vehicle's recommended rating to avoid potential tire blowouts. Although the chances for a blowout to happen are low, make sure to check your Owner's Manual to find the rating specific to your vehicle and keep your car's load weight in mind.
