Winter Tires Vs. All-Season Tires: What's the Difference?

WESTLAND, Mich.––The snow and ice are coming because it is indeed winter in Michigan! When the winter weather arrives, we all run around to prepare our houses and cars for the next few months. One of the easiest ways to prepare your car and stay safe on the road in the crummy cold weather is having winter tires or snow tires put on your car. Some may think it's a better option to simply have all-season tires all year to avoid the hassle of tire service, while others deem it necessary to have winter tires during the cold months. We're here to evaluate winter tires vs. all-season tires to give you a better idea of what to do this winter!

Winter Tires Vs. All-Season Tires

WINTER TIRES

-Made of a softer rubber compound that can wear quickly in warm temperatures
-Has wider, symmetric tread designs to allow room for slush, packed snow, ice, etc.
-Tread is typically more aggressive for stronger grip on edges
-GREAT for environments where the temperature goes below 45 degrees often
-NOT great for use year-round (it can actually cost you more if you use them all year)

ALL-SEASON TIRES

-Made of a tougher rubber compound that can harden in low temps, equaling less traction
-Has tighter tread designs, lacking room for packed snow and slush
-Has asymmetrical tread to handle wet and dry pavement
-Can handle a variety of road conditions (dry, wet, and light snow)
-GREAT for environments where the winter is mild
-NOT great for places where snow is heavy and temperatures are cold

"But what if I have AWD or 4WD?"

This is something you might be thinking about when going to purchase tires. Although these drivetrains are helpful in providing more traction generally, they lack in providing extra traction in icy and snowy conditions, especially in braking situations. Tested side-by-side by consumerreports.org, a sedan with winter tires and a AWD utility vehicle with winter tires use about the same braking distance in snowy conditions.

Winter Tires Vs. All-Season Tires
If you decide you would like a set of winter tires to replace your all-season, or vice versa, we'd love to help you do so. At North Brothers, you can take advantage of our 30-day low-price tire guarantee, so you can be sure you're getting the lowest price on tires from 13 major brands! Plus, we'll professionally install them for you. You can find and get a quote for new tires and schedule an appointment online to have them installed. If you already have a set of winter tires sitting in your garage and want them swapped, we can take care of that too. We know the winter tires vs. all-season tires decision can be tough, but we're here to help. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Great Local Organizations Worth Donating to This Season

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Christmas is only 3 days away! Can you believe it? If you're feeling in the spirit of the season, consider giving to not just your family and friends but to the community as well, as long as you're able. By providing a little gift to organizations, companies, and people who consistently support our Westland/Wayne community, you'll be helping to make it a better place to live. There are lots of people out there right here in our community who need your help, but where can you make a donation? Here are some great local organizations worth donating to this season:

Great Local Organizations Worth Donating to This Season

Wayne County Family Center The Family Center in our neighboring Wayne County offers transitional shelter for homeless families along with other services including easy access to the SMART bus line, a laundry room, three balanced meals and snacks during the day, licensed child care for preschoolers, job counseling and placement, case management, financial planning, a medical clinic, and most importantly, help finding a home! This organization allow the families in our area to live a semi normal life while they work towards permanent placement. We make a donation to the Wayne County Family Center from our Annual Golf Outing proceeds each year. Consider making your own donation this Holiday season.

Westland Youth Assistance The Youth Assistance Program offers assessment meetings, drug screening, free academic enrichment, mentoring, drug screening, recreational activities, guest speaker presentations, life choices classes, and other services for ages 9-16 from Westland. These children are referred by Police, Courts, Schools, Parents/Guardians, and other agencies for the services listed above that are geared towards providing a healthy and successful life. We provide funding for this program along with other great organizations, and hope you will make a donation this season!

Starfish Family Services This organization stretches across metropolitan Detroit, with a location in Westland, Inkster, Livonia, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and Redford. Starfish Family Services offers plenty head start or preschool programs, youth programs, parenting programs, preschool, finance services, counseling and health services, community programs, and a shelter & crisis center. All these programs offer people the resources to be well supported role models, and outstanding citizens all while having a little fun. Their goal is to provide the children of our communities a brighter future and you can contribute a little to make this happen!

Angels' Place of Oakland County Angels' Place provides people-centered services like housing, enrichment programs and outings, and professional support for adults with developmental disabilities, or primarily intellectual disabilities. This organization hosts 20 homes in Metro Detroit (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County) and usually provides care for the rest of these adults' lives. All of Angels' Place operations is funded by fundraisers, social security & Community Mental Health Funding, and donations. The organization is responsible for about 35% of operating costs and it takes on average $62,000+ per resident per year for support. We hope you'll consider donating this season - and make sure to check out their merchant supporters where you can shop to donate all year long.

P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue This non-profit, all-breed, rescue organization saves and hosts many abandoned or rescued dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from Michigan and Ohio throughout the year through their foster homes. They often host events for adoption throughout Metro Detroit, and have partnered with North Brothers Ford in the past. P.O.E.T. regularly needs food and pet supplies to support each animal waiting for adoption and if you're a pet owner, you know this can be expensive! Help this organization keep these animals happy and healthy this season and throw them a bone or two by donating online!

There are many other organizations in the Westland and Wayne area that we didn't mention above that need your help. These organizations require donations to continue doing what they do in supporting the people, and animals, of our community not just during the holiday season, but all year long. If you're able to, we hope you'll consider making a donation to these worthy organizations this Christmas. Stay tuned to our blog, website, and social media accounts for events and more information on giving back to the community in partnership with North Brothers Ford! We hope you have a safe and happy Holiday!

Tips for Keeping Your Dog Healthy and Safe During Winter

WESTLAND, Mich. –– It is undeniably winter in Southeast Michigan, even though it's felt more like spring at moments. Although the weather is quite mild now, the snow, wind, and bitter cold air are bound to make a return, because this is indeed the state of Michigan (Thrillist's #2 most miserable winter state). As hard as it is for us to endure this miserable weather, the same goes for our pets! They may love to play in the snow and cold, but it's your responsibility to ultimately care for them and keep them safe. Take a look at our tips for keeping your dog healthy and safe during the winter.

Tips for Keeping Your Dog Healthy and Safe During Winter

  • Avoid Bathing Them if Possible: If your stinky pup can get away without a bath for a while, let them! Just like us, pets will get dry, flaky skin because of the cold dry air which can be irritating and itchy. If you do need to bathe them, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Also, running a humidifier inside your home will help you and your pets with dry skin.
  • Give Them Chances to Exercise: If the temperature outside is mild, this is a great time to get them outdoors for some exercise. Whether it's a simple walk around the neighborhood, or a trip to the nearest outdoor mall for some new and exciting smells and socialization, any exercise is great for your doggo. This can also help bored pups expend their energy in a useful way, rather than tearing up the couch or your shoes.
  • Understand When It's Just Too Cold: If it's too cold outside for you, it's too cold for your pets. Your pets are happiest and the safest inside on unbearably cold days. See our tips below for entertaining them when it's an 'indoor day'. It's also a good idea to provide a warm blanket and pillow or bedding so they can keep warm during their downtime.
  • Provide Fun Indoor Activities: When the weather is nasty outside, or too cold your dog still needs entertainment and activity. Some dogs are great at grabbing a toy and entertaining themselves, while others will beg for your attention. Know your dogs play-style and personality and make an effort to provide them with fun puzzle games, play time with you, and mini training sessions to keep them occupied and interested.
  • Protect Paws Before and After Going Outside: Pets going outdoors, even if it is a short walk, can be affected by the salt and ice on their paws. Using petroleum jelly or another type of pet-safe moisturizer will help protect their pads before going out. It's also a good idea to wipe paw pads with a damp towel to rid them of salt that can dry them out and irritate the pets mouth if they lick them. Pay attention to in-between the toes and remove any snow clumps or salt.
We love our pets like family, so we treat them like family. Make sure to follow our tips for keeping you dog healthy and safe during winter! If you're looking for a new addition to the family, check out our furry friends at P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue where you can adopt a loving pupper that's perfect for you or your family. If you're in search of a vehicle that better fits you a your dog's lifestyle, stop by North Brothers Ford! We'd be happy to help you find a great crossover/SUV that can easily fit you and the fur-baby (or babies), like the 2018 Ford Escape or 2017 Ford Explorer!

Ford Brings Autonomous & Electric Vehicle Business to Corktown

WESTLAND, Mich.,––Ford, one of Detroit's Big Three, has been a leader in the autonomous and mobility space for a while now and has played a large role in the growth of electric vehicles in the market. Ford is bringing its ultimate mission of improving the entire transportation system and people's overall quality of life to an up and coming neighborhood in Detroit. Ford is relocating their autonomous and electric vehicle business to Corktown.

Ford Bring Autonomous & Electric Vehicle Business to Corktown

220+ employees from Ford's key business and strategy teams, who work on autonomous and electric vehicle business, will soon be working in a 45,000 sq. ft. historic building they call "The Factory". Ford has chose Corktown for relocation in hopes of creating new business in a resurgent, diverse neighborhood with industrial roots. Not to mention, the pure urban setting will serve as a perfect test platform for the mobility solutions these teams will be working towards.

Beginning early next year, these teams will be studying and experiencing the mobility-based challenges Detroiters face each and every day. Some of the challenges these teams want to find solutions for include: pollution, congestion, accidents, and other issues with transportation that have an effect on the quality of life of citizens.

For Executive Chairman, Bill Ford, this relocation means something more to him. Long ago, his family emigrated from County Cork Ireland to what is now known as the Corktown neighborhood in Detroit, appropriately named by the Irish immigrants. For the company, this relocation means a deeper commitment to where the company first got its start. Further, this move Corktown will hopefully bring some new life to the area.

“Returning to Detroit is particularly meaningful, because it is where my great-grandfather originally set out to pursue his passion and where we have always called our home,” said Ford. “We are planting a special piece of our company’s future in one of the city’s great neighborhoods, because we believe in Detroit, its people and what we can build together.”

By having these key strategic teams together in a truly collaborative space in a flourishing neighborhood where within the answers to their work lie, we expect big moves in the autonomous, electric vehicle, and mobility industry from Ford! We congratulate them on their most recent business move to a neighborhood in our beloved city and look forward to their accomplishments in the New Year.

If you're looking to get in on Ford's latest and greatest consumer products, we'd love to show you what's available at North Brothers Ford. Included with many new Ford vehicles is the FordPass app which can help solve some of your current mobility issues like parking in the city, as well as advanced driver assistive features, like Adaptive Cruise Control, that provide a glimpse into the future of autonomy. Check out our wide selection of new Ford cars, crossovers, SUVs, and trucks on our website, or visit us at our lot in Westland for a test drive!

When he's startled by Scott's calling out and falls, the Santa impersonator disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on. Tips for Driving in the Snow & Ice

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– If you haven't been outside yet today, let us tell you the news: winter is here! We're expecting our first bit of snow this weekend, which means it's time to break out the warm winter gear and brush up on some winter driving skills. Some love the snow and cold, while others dread it every year. Either way, you'll need to be out on the road at some point to go to work, do holiday shopping, run errands, etc. Equip yourself for the season with these tips for driving in the snow and ice!

Tips for Driving in the Snow & Ice

First, making sure you completely clear your car of all snow and ice, especially on your front windshield, back windshield, windows, and headlights is the most important thing you can do. This helps to provide you a clear view of the road around you and allows others to see your lights clearly when it matters most! Invest in a good ice scraper/snow brush or even a windshield blanket to make it easier on you.

Second, most drivers who park outside in Michigan believe they need to warm their cars up for an extended period of time (on average 5 minutes). Did you know it only takes about 30 seconds of warm-up for your engine to be ready to go? Your car will actually warm up better by being driven. By idling past 30 seconds your car might be warm on the inside, but you'll be wasting more gas than necessary. Just bundle up and get going!

Third, don't assume anything. If you feel more confident in the snow just because you have 4x4 or AWD, think again! Even vehicles that are built to get more traction can slip and slide in the right conditions. Always look twice for ice patches and take every precaution you would without the 4WD. In fact, winter tires or snow tires will help you car perform better than an AWD with all-season tires.

Next, let's get to the driving tips!

1. Accelerate and decelerate with about twice the distance you normally would. You want to give your tires enough time to gain the traction it needs to get moving or to slow down. Just remember, everything is slower in the snow.

2. Avoid braking hard or fast. Again, everything takes longer in the snow and quick actions can cause your car to react by slipping and sliding.

3. Increase your following distance. Because everything takes longer, you'll need more distance in between you and the car in front of you in case you need to brake, switch lanes, etc.

4. Continue through a yellow light that's turning red if you need to. If you don't have enough distance to safely stop, it's better to run a turning light than to risk dangerously sliding through the intersection.

5. If your car slides or skids, keep your hands on the wheel and take your foot off the pedal. Unless you're a driving expert, it's hard to properly handle your car in a skid and you could risk involving yourself and others in an accident.

6. Don't use cruise control. When the roads are slippery, you'll want full control of your car's actions. Cruise control won't be able to detect a patch of ice or snow and adjust properly!

7. Slow down! The posted speed limits are only valid for dry pavement. When it comes to your safety on the road, slowing down is imperative. It's better to arrive safe than to risk your life so you can arrive at your destination a few minutes early.

Another thing to consider is routine maintenance! Your vehicle is the most safe when all of its parts are working properly. Check out our winter car care tips online and schedule a service appointment on our website to make things convenient. When you come in for your next oil change, our professional technicians will inspect your vehicle's critical components and bring anything of concern to your attention.

Ford F-150 Awarded 2018 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy & Motor Trend Truck of the Year Titles

WESTLAND, Mich.,––It's no secret the Ford F-150 is America's favorite pickup truck. This season, it's picking up some new titles to it's seemingly ever-growing list of accolades. The Ford F-150 has been named a Kelley Blue Book "2018 Best Buy" and was awarded the coveted title of Motor Trend's 2018 Truck of the Year. Here's why:

KBB Pickup Truck Best Buy of 2018: 2018 Ford F-150

Kelley Blue Book gives these awards based on testing to cars who meet their "best bang for your buck" motto. There are 12 vehicle categories which are measured by vehicle pricing, consumer ratings, sales information, and one of the most important factors, the 5-year-cost-to-own price. See the video below for more insight on what each vehicle tested is measured on.

The 2018 Ford F-150 comes in a variety of models to fit every budget and need. It's recently received an upgrade to it's exterior and styling, so whichever model you choose you'll look good on the road. Aside from the base model engine, each option is also backed by a 10-speed transmission, serious towing power, and an almost sporty drive thanks to the aluminum body.

“For four years straight, the Ford F-150 has taken the pickup truck honors in our Best Buy competition. And, for four years straight, nobody else has come close to toppling it. This year, Ford updated the styling, added a new base engine, expanded the availability of its excellent 10-speed automatic, and promises to add a turbodiesel to its lineup of engines later this year,” KBB.com editors.

Motor Trend 2018 Truck of the Year: 2018 Ford F-150

Going up against two pickup variants from GM (a Chevy Colorado ZR2 and Duramax Turbodiesel Silverado, and GMC Sierra Denali), the Ford F-150 still took the title. Motor Trend takes many items into consideration when testing and judging the vehicles, which includes maxing out each trucks towing capacity, looking closely at the engines, inspecting interior features, and driving style. Ford's 2018 4x4 SuperCrew Lariat, 2018 4x4 Platinum, and 2018 Raptor SuperCrew took the cake in almost every category.

"Ford proved its superiority with an impressive range of trucks with a different grille and wheel-tire combo for every taste and ride and handling that have come a long way since 2015."

Ford recently spent over $1 billion to switch from a steel body to an aluminum body, which cost Ford in sales as well, but it was a part of their larger vision in reimagining a better pickup truck. The loss of weight due to this switch makes for better handling, precise steering, and more fun driving overall. You can see all the specifications and testing information on MotorTrend.com

It was unanimous. The Ford F-150 is Motor Trend’s 2018 Truck of the Year. “It was a pretty resounding win,” road test editor Chris Walton said. “Nothing really came close.”
