2015 Ford F-150's New Aluminum Body

WESTLAND, Mich.—The 2015 Ford F-150 is an industry first, with its body made of high-strength aluminum alloy, rather than the steel that had previously been used. But what does the 2015 Ford F-150’s new aluminum body mean for you, the driver? 

Ford has reported that they managed to reduce the weight of the F-150 by 700 pounds as a result of the switch to aluminum, thus increasing fuel economy by 20%. The lighter vehicle also has better handling, faster acceleration, and greater towing and payload capacities than its steel-bodied predecessor. 

While it has many benefits over steel, aluminum is also much different to work with than steel. The change in material allows for such a dramatic reduction in weight because aluminum is much less dense than steel. This also means that repairs to the aluminum require special tools and training that not all repair shops have. In response to the need for these new repair services, Ford has trained over 750 dealerships nationwide to be certified in repairing the 2015 Ford F-150’s new aluminum body.

Consumer Reports recently analyzed the cost difference between repairing a 2015 Ford F-150 and the previous year’s model, which has a steel body. They found that repair costs are roughly equivalent at dealerships that are Ford certified to do the repairs. Costs may be higher at repair shops that are not certified, as they may not have the training and tools necessary to complete the job quickly. 2015 F-150 Tests at Bald Mountain Gold Mine

WESTLAND, Mich - Ford Motor Company's first aluminum-bodied 2015 F-150 Tests at the Bald Mountain Gold Mine in Elko, Nevada to see if it can handle some torture trail runs from one of its most demanding customers, the mining industry. Bald Mountain, owned and operated by Barrick Gold Corporation, is an open-pit, heap leach gold mine located in the Southern Ruby Mountains of northwest Nevada. The site is frequently used to experiment with Ford's latest F-150 trucks; in fact, Bald Mountain will be responsible for roughly 200,000 of the 10 million miles of testing done on the 2015 F-150 before it rolls off the assembly line.

Lima Engine Plant Receives $500 Million Investment from Ford

WESTLAND, Mich - The Lima Engine Plant Receives a $500 Million Investment from Ford Motor Company, which will be put to good use for plant updates and the additional 300 new jobs that will be created to help with production of the all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost® for the 2015 Ford F-150. Since 2010, the new EcoBoost engine's demand has grown over 600 percent; the F-150 can be credited for 91 percent of this growth. As Ford customers continue to demand the EcoBoost engines, the Ohio Plant engineers will work hard to meet their needs. The Lima Engine Plant is ready to put production for the latest and most technologically advanced engine in full force. 

Currently, the Lima Engine Plant produces 3.5-liter and 3.7-liter Duratec® V6 engines for various Ford vehicles -this includes the Edge and Explorer utilities, the Lincoln MKZ crossover, MKT utility and MKZ sedan.  The $500 million investment will be used to add a flexible engine assembly system as well as to renovate 700,000 square feet of the plant for the addition of other machining and assembly functions. For the past 60 years, Lima Engine has helped keep Ford and Lincoln vehicles running strong. Adding the production of the 2.7-liter to the Ohio facility will make for a solid future for both Ford Motor Company and the engineers.

Customers will get a complete package of power and performance in their F-150 thanks to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine. This EcoBoost uses standard Auto Start-Stop technology that will improve the F-150's performance and overall efficiency. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost also has some fine tuning; specialized elements specifically for truck customers. When drivers are towing or using the four-wheel-drive mode, the Auto Start-Stop turns off the engine automatically when the vehicle is at a stop. The engine then restarts immediately as the driver releases the brake. From a performance standpoint, the engine's compacted graphite iron and aluminum engine block reduces weight and strengthens the truck where it is most necessary.

2014 NAIAS Ford Display Has Largest Customer Involvement Ever

WESTLAND, Mich - The 66,000 square foot 2014 NAIAS Ford Display has the Largest Customer Involvement Ever. The Cobo Center in Downtown Detroit has been and will continue to be flooded with car fanatics of all ages. Ford raised the bar this year with a memorable presentation of what the company has in store for the future.

A line of 82 vehicles and the latest in Ford products are scattered around 66,167 square feet of floor space for visitors of all ages to enjoy. The new upper-level of the display shows appreciation of "50 Years of Mustang", while another section is dedicated to "The Future of Tough".

This year, customers are able to interact with Ford vehicles in new ways that will showcase the strength and quality of the new products. "The Future of Tough" has the all-new F-150 as a focal point, one of the most buzzed about vehicles this year. A 22 foot tall, 75,000 pound assembly line display shows consumers the productions stages of the F-150. Each stage of construction touches on a different theme; durability, capability, efficiency, and technology.

The all-new pony car has been an icon for over 50 years and Ford paying a special tribute to it in this year's display. The 2015 Mustang is the center of attention at the stand this year. The upper-level exhibit will expose customers to 50 years of Mustang cultural and historical artifacts. It will also highlight references to the Mustang's impact on fashion, film, food, and fun the last 50 years.

A live engagement presentation and film is part of the display as well. Visitors have the chance to take part in the narration and presentation via two cameras that are catching all of the showgoers checking out the Mustang exhibit. An ST area allows two visitors to race in a head-to-head simulated road course. Winning times can be recorded and shared via personal social networks.

David Tillapaugh, Global Auto Show Operations Manager for Ford, stated that the 2014 NAIAS Ford Display has the Largest Customer Involvement Ever. He also made note that this year will be the prime opportunity for Ford to engage consumers right at the entrance of the display and allow them to see for themselves what makes "Ford Go Further".
