7 Festive Christmas Traditions in Michigan

WESTLAND, Mich. –– We don't want to start any debates, so rather than telling you why we think Michigan is the best state in which to celebrate Christmas––which, of course, we believe is true––we put together a list of seven festive Christmas traditions in Michigan that help make our state a winter wonderland perfect for celebrating the holidays in.

Bronner's Christmas Wonderland

It's considered a sin to not have an ornament from Bronner's Christmas Wonderland on your Christmas tree if you live in Michigan. Bronner's, located in Frankenmuth, is the largest Christmas store in the world, and the store validates that statement itself when you walk through its doors for the first time. Whether you're looking for unique or specific ornaments, or other decorations, Bronner's provides traditional and modern styles of Christmas decor, and floods your wintery soul with such a Spirit of Christmas one visit should be enough to carry you through the holidays and into January.

Christmas Light Drives

Chances are you live near a drive-through Christmas lights drive if you live in Michigan. It makes sense that Michigan would have a number of these festivals available considering the state is home to the Motor City. Two of the most popular Christmas lights drives available to Michiganders are Wayne County Light Fest, in Wayne County––the county of Detroit––and Nite Lights at Jackson County Fairgrounds. Both of these lights drives do great jobs at blending  their areas' rich automotive histories with Christmas.

"It's Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue"

There are plenty of famous Christmas songs we all love to sing, but Detroit has a caroling anthem of its own that rivals the biggest American cities' Christmas-themed songs. "Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue", sung by Karen Newman, has become a Detroit-area and Michigan favorite. In our opinion, it's the best embodiment of the true Christmas spirit that has prevailed even throughout the most conflicting times of Michigan's largest city.

Christmas Tree Farms

Michigan is traditionally a heavily forested state, so it makes sense that it ranks third in the U.S. for the number of Christmas trees harvested annually, producing 3 million trees on average. There are nearly 700 Christmas tree growers in Michigan, and the state grows more than a dozen Christmas tree varieties––more than any other state! Christmas at Crossroads Holiday Magic

If you're looking for the original Polar Express, visit Huckleberry Railroad in Genesee County for Christmas at Crossroads Holiday Magic. During the holidays, Michigan families enjoy festive nighttime rides, can see costumed villagers preparing their homes and shops for Christmas, visit with Santa Claus, and enjoy many more festive holiday activities.

Christmas Tree Lighting

Every town has their own Christmas traditions, but around Michigan there are always strong holiday vibes in the air, or maybe it's the smell of massive pine trees in the centers of downtowns across the state bursting with color as cities light them in Christmas tree lighting ceremonies. Two of the most famous and important tree lighting ceremonies in the state take place in Lansing, Michigan's capital, during Silver Bells in the City, and in Detroit during the Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony at Campus Martius, the central park of downtown. Although a litany of Michigan Christmas traditions exist, there's nothing like attending a Christmas tree lighting ceremony to welcome the holidays in Michigan.
