How to Protect Your Vehicle from Flood Damage

How to Protect Your Vehicle from Flood Damage

WESTLAND, Mich.–– Every year, vehicles become damaged from severe storms and hurricanes throughout the United States. And now that spring is here, excessive rain is sure to follow. It's important to know how to protect your vehicle from flood damage in the event of high flood waters. If you aren't careful when driving through flooded areas, your water can become susceptible to water damage, leaving you with a lofty auto service bill. Cover your bases with this how-to guide:

1. Avoid Flooded Areas & Take a Different Route
If you are aware of flooded areas along your normal route, check and see if there is a different road that you can take that'll get you to your destination. Even if takes a little bit longer, it's worth it to protect your ride from high waters.

2. Stop & Assess Floods Before Driving Through
You can never be too sure of the depth of the water or the state of the road underneath. It's best if you try and gauge the depth and possible currents to ensure your vehicle doesn't become flooded or swept away! The rule of thumb is to never drive through water that is more than six-inches deep.

3. Be Careful When Passing Other Cars
Avoid following and crossing paths with other drivers that could cause you to stray off your intended path. Large vehicles are extremely hazardous because they can create waves that push water higher than expected.

4. Lower Your Speed
If you decide to drive through high water, it is recommended that you enter at 1-2 mph. Any faster and your car might hydroplane, causing you to lose control.

5. Keep Revving Your Engine
Once you're in the water, try and keep your car's revs up. This will prevent water from being sucked back into the exhaust. Accelerating up to 4-5 mph will create a small wave that will protect your car's engine from the high water.

6. Try Not to Stall Out
When trying to clear a flooded area of the road, the most important thing to do is prevent your vehicle from stalling. In the event that your car does stall, try and start your car right away. The longer you wait, the further the water will creep up your exhaust.

7. Dry Your Brakes
Even if you make it safely through the flooded water, you're not done yet. It's crucial to dry your brakes out for them to work properly. For the next few miles, drive slowly and regularly apply the brakes to heat them up and allow the water to evaporate.

Although it is possible to drive through a little bit of flooded water, we highly recommend that you avoid driving through it as a whole. Ensuring that your ride performs its best at all times is our goal. Make sure you know how to protect your vehicle from flood damage by following our guide! In the event that your car runs into issues from flooded water, bring it in immediately to our service department. We will fix any major issues you have and get your ride back to you in no time! Get Your Ford Ready for Spring

WESTLAND, Mich.–– The beautiful spring season is finally upon us! As we look forward to warmer weather and blooming flowers, it's the perfect time for some spring cleaning. Prep your vehicle for the sunnier days ahead and rid it of the negative impact it received during the long winter. It's important to take care of your investment all year round. Get your Ford ready for spring with these car care tips!

Get Your Ford Ready for Spring

Interior
  • Collect all garbage off the floor, under the seats, inside the center console and side storage pockets, and any other space you have items laying around.
  • Organize all your small in-car items.
  • Use coffee filters to dust your dash and plastic surfaces, as they don't leave behind fibers.
  • Wash away the streaks on your windows using a vinegar-based solution and semi-wet microfiber rag. Wipe clean with a dry rag.
  • Take the rugs out and shake the loose dirt and particles. Then, vacuum both your seats and your floors, making sure to get in those hard to reach places.
  • Add an air freshener to make your car smell extra fresh.

Exterior
  • Use a specialized car cleaner soap and soft sponge to scrub the dirt off your vehicle's exterior.
  • Take dryer sheets and rub them on your grille and hood to get those nasty bugs off.
  • To remove tree sap, use very hot water and a soapy microfiber rag.
  • Remember to fully rinse your vehicle before and after the suds.
  • If you can, try to rinse the undercarriage of your car to clean out dirt, salt, and any other gunk from the parts that matter most.
  • Make sure to change the water if it gets too dirty and to continuously clean out the sponge.
  • Rinse and wash your car one side at a time to ensure the soap doesn't dry.
  • Waxing is a crucial part of maintaining your vehicle's paint and keeps dirt and grime from scratching the exterior.

Maintenance
  • Change your oil and oil filter at regular intervals, as indicated in your owner's manual.
  • Check your vehicle's fluids. These include transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, windshield wiper solvent, and coolant.
  • Your wiper blades take a beating during the winter from all that snow. It's a good idea to get them replaced to ensure they'll be able to wipe away rain during spring showers.
  • Get your car battery tested. Cold temps can do a number on your battery, so getting it replaced may be a good idea.
  • Taking care of your tires and consistently checking to make sure they are in good shape is crucial. Measure the tire pressure to make sure it is set at its specified setting. Check your tires for any signs of major tread wear, irregular tread wear, abnormal bulges, and cracks in the sidewall.
  • Your vehicle may be in need of an alignment if the steering wheel vibrates, it pulls to the left or the right, the tires squeal, or if there is any uneven tire wear.

Get your Ford ready for spring with these tips that'll expand the life of your vehicle and ensure it's ready to hit the road at all times. Dedicate a day to cleaning out your car, giving it a wash, and bringing it in for routine maintenance. You'll be thankful you did. Schedule an appointment online with our service team for any oil changes, vehicle alignments, tire rotations, or other service needs you have. We'll be happy to help you get your car ready for the spring season!

California Special Makes a Return for 2019 Mustang

WESTLAND, Mich.–– America's favorite sports car is back for the 2019 year with an all-time favorite limited edition design. And no, it's not the BULLITT. Since 1968, Ford has created only a handful of exclusive Mustang designs, each representing this legendary sports car's resilient legacy. With upgraded style and tech, the California Special makes a return for the 2019 Mustang. Keep reading for more information on this special edition's newest updates and best features.

California Special Makes a Return for 2019 Mustang

"No doubt, 2019 is an exciting year for Mustang enthusiasts, especially fans of our California Special and BULLITT models," said Corey Holter, Ford car group marketing manager. "This year further targets hardcore enthusiasts who want even more performance from BULLITT, while new technology - including rev-matching on manual transmission-equipped Mustang GT and active valve performance exhaust on the EcoBoost model - means even more thrills."

The original California Special version featured a blacked-out grille, fog lamps, and a side racing stripe. Along with this notable design, it carried a Shelby-inspired spoiler, custom taillamps and twist-lock hood fasteners. From there, the sports car was put into production for 1968 and gained attention comparable to the Shelby, Boss, and Mach-1 special-edition Mustangs.

As a tribute to the first California Special, the 2019 California Special Mustang GT will share an inspired design from the original build. This design features a trademark fading stipe that traces from the 5.0 side badge to the rear fender scoop, unique five-spoke painted machined wheels, a blacked-out open grille, and a signature Ebony Black and Race Red script California Special badge on the trunk lid.

Step inside the car to find rich black Miko suede-trimmed seats with embossed GT/CS insignia and contrast red accent stitching, custom embroidered GT/CS floor mats, and signature California Special script badging on the passenger-side dash panel.

California Special Makes a Return for 2019 Mustang

"Few things are more satisfying than dropping the top on a California Special and taking a drive down the majestic Pacific Coast Highway," said Mark Conforzi, Ford designer. "This signature design takes its cues from the original California Special, while enhancing the personality of today's Mustang."

The 2019 California Special Mustang GT is back and better than ever. You'll want to get behind the wheel of this 5.0-liter V-8 engine with a mated 6-speed manual transmission. Still not impressed? How does 460 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque sound? Watch the video below to get an even more in-depth look into the refined interior and exterior of the 2019 California Special that make it a true dream car for many.

Training Tips to Prepare for the 5K Fun Run this May

WESTLAND, Mich.––Our 20th Annual 5K Fun Run is taking place this May and we're so excited! More details will be announced shortly regarding the date, location, and donation recipient, but we want to help you get started preparing for the race now. Since the weather has been getting warmer, and the snow is finally clearing up a bit, it's the perfect time to lace up your running shoes to do some training. Here are our training tips to prepare for the 5K Fun Run this May for current running fanatics AND new runners!

1. Follow a Running Program or Schedule

If you currently classify yourself as a "runner", then skip this tip. If you're just dabbling in the running scene or are just starting to run want to run a 5k, then this tip is for you! One of the easiest ways is to find an exercise or running program that works for you and your schedule. There's plenty of resources on the internet, and personal trainers available to help you begin running. There's also specific guides for how to train for a 5k. Do your research, choose a program, and stick to it. Check out the one below:

2. Practice Your Breathing

Being more aware of your body and what it's doing while your running can help you improve. One major element of running is breathing. Because running is pure cardio, your heart rate will increase, and so your breathing. If your breathing is what's stopping you from continuing to run, try using the technique in the photo below. Focus on your breathing rate and find a rhythm that's more comfortable for you. Outside of running, you can pick up the practice of meditation to help you focus on your breathing and get more in touch with your body.

3. Pay Attention to Your Form

We don't mean your literal body, but the position your body is in. Your running form is important to your running performance. Many times injuries or exhaustion happen because of bad form. While beginning runners may just need to practice endurance, these tips are still useful to help form good running habits. If it helps, grab a partner and have them video tape or photograph you running so you can specifically pick out spots for improvement.

4. Start Eating Healthier

If your New Year's resolutions included "eating healthier", this is your friendly reminder to keep it up! All you need to do to make yourself a little bit healthier is to make good small decisions, like having an apple instead of chips as part of your lunch, or avoiding temptation by leaving desserts out of the house. Junk food is alright every now and again, and a piece of chocolate everyday won't kill you. Simple be smarter about your choices, practice moderation, and don't overthink it.

4. Add Strength Training Into Your Exercise Routine

Cardio training is great for endurance, especially for long-term runners, but strength training is just as important. Adding strength to your muscles all around, your legs, arms, back, and core, will make it easier to run overall. Not only that, but the added strength will help to prevent injury. If you're new to strength training, start by testing your strength with basic exercises like bicep curls, hamstring curls, tricep dips, etc. You can also follow a program that instructs which exercise to do, how many reps, how many sets, and how often to help you get in the swing of things.

We hope these training tips to prepare for the 5K Fun Run this May will help you along your journey of being a better runner. We're so excited to host our annual 5K Fun Run in the Westland community again this year and we hope to see you all there! We can help you with everything from new shoes (new tires) to oil changes and more at our Service Center in Westland. WESTLAND, Mich.,––Ford has just introduced the brand new Transit Connect. Not sure what this model Ford vehicle is? The Transit Connect is a cargo van or wagon. It doesn't quite look like a minivan, but like a smaller  business van you might see out making deliveries or service calls. The 2019 Ford Transit Connect is an ideal small business vehicle, not just because of its versatility and affordability for entrepreneurs and small business owners, but because of its new added safety features, engine options, and advanced in-vehicle technology. Other new features in the 2019 Ford Transit include SYNC3 infotainment technology with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and coming soon, Waze. This market would be able to run their small business during the day and tote their grandkids around for a fun weekend without hesitation. The Transit Connect seats up to seven passengers and has roof rails for all kinds of equipment like bikes, kayaks, etc.
