Carpool Maintenance Checklist

WESTLAND, Mich.––Are you planning a carpool for this school year? Maybe it's with a family friend that lives down the road, or with some kids in the neighborhood. Whomever you're toting around, we first of all commend you as a group for making an effort to save on gas, but we want you to be safe doing so. When you're carpooling, you're not just responsible for your safety, but others' safety as well! With our Carpool Maintenance Checklist, you can easily ensure your car, crossover, SUV, or van is ready to get everyone where they need to be, safely.

Carpool Maintenance Checklist

1. Check Your Tires

This August was National Tire Safety Month. In fact, we have plenty of resources including our Tire Maintenance tips blog, that you can use when you're doing routine maintenance. The main tips to use when checking your tires are: 1.) Make sure each tire is inflated properly and equally. You can find this number on the sticker on the inside of your driver's door. Do this while your tires are 'cold', or haven't been driven in hours. 2.) Have your tires rotated at your next oil change to ensure your tires are wearing evenly. This can help extend the life of your tires. 3.) Visually inspect your tires for any uneven tread wear, tread depth, and for any bulging or unusual looking damage.

2. Have Your Oil Changed

As simple as it might sound, this is one of the easiest ways to keep your car in good shape. This will help your engine components run efficiently, wear less quickly, and help prevent your engine from overheating. Every 3,000-5,000 miles is when you should have your oil changed. Most times, synthetic or a synthetic blend will be used or recommended, which can help extend the service interval towards 5,000 miles.

3. Inspect Your Brakes

Your brakes are one of the most important safety components, so having them checked will ensure you have the stopping power needed in any situation. If you don't know your way around the brakes, you can have them checked quickly at your next oil change at North Brothers. Some signs you can look out for if your brakes need service include: a squealing noise when applying brakes, soft or spongy feeling brakes, shaky steering wheel when stopping, and a visibly worn brake pad.

4. Put On New Wiper Blades

You can do this step right at home, but we can take care of it at your next oil change if that's more convenient for you! We recommend investing in a quality pair of wiper blades so you're prepared for any foggy, rainy, or snowy (yes, it's possible in Michigan) morning. Remember, your wiper blades allow you to see the road clearly and can be a lifesaver in some situations.

5. Test All Your Seat Belts

Whether you have a short or long drive to your destination, your seat belts are of the utmost importance. Taking a minute or two to check and test all the seat belts in your vehicle will give you peace of mind. Make sure to enforce a seat belt policy with your carpool group so everyone is equally safe.

If it's just you doing the carpooling and would like help completing your checklist, bring your vehicle into our well-equipped Service Center and we'll have you taken care of. If there are multiple participants in your carpool group, send this Carpool Maintenance Checklist out so you can ensure you and/or your child is safe when others are driving.

You can raise your awareness on what your car needs throughout the year by referencing our Seasonal Maintenance and Routine Maintenance pages. We're here to help you with anything auto. 2017 Ford Escape and Fusion Will Offer A Better Listening Experience

WESTLAND, Mich.––Whether it's the static on the radio, the road noise, or simply low-quality speakers in your car, it's annoying and it can really downgrade your overall driving experience. If you've ever been driving through a downtown or mountainous area and your radio all the sudden cuts out, you might want to listen up (pun intended) to what Ford has to say. The 2017 Ford Escape and Fusion will offer a better listening experience with improved radio reception, better quality audio, and improved cabin acoustics.

2017 Ford Escape and Fusion Will Offer A Better Listening Experience
It doesn't matter if you're listening to an audiobook, a metal music album, or your favorite FM station, your sound quality is important to you. Because driving requires full attention on the road, we lean towards audio stimulation for entertainment. In fact, 93% of Americans listen to the radio weekly, which is more so than smart phones or TV. Thanks to Ford, and their wonderful habit of innovating for customer satisfaction, the 2017 Ford Escape and 2017 Ford Fusion will come available with the following items:

-An industry first dual reception radio system for HD radio
-Digital audio bus technology
-Sony audio systems
-Acoustic laminated glass (in the Fusion)

The dual reception radio system includes a two receivers, one of which is on the rear-window heater grid. Having two receivers helps eliminate or reduce interference, because the frequency is received twice. This technology is especially helpful in cities and certain landscapes, like the mountains, which are notorious for bouncing radio signals. It's also helpful because the secondary receiver will determine which FM radio signal is the strongest, or most reliable, and will switch to whichever signal that is.
2017 Ford Escape and Fusion Will Offer A Better Listening Experience

2017 Ford Escape and Fusion Will Offer A Better Listening Experience

Digital audio bus technology delivers high-fidelity sound. The acoustic laminated glass, available in the Fusion, comes together with the digital audio bus technology to create a smooth sound by blocking road noise. The 2017 Ford Fusion with acoustic laminated glass provides more cabin quietness than the 2016 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The number of speakers on the Fusion Hybrid S and Hybrid SE are increasing from six to nine. The Hybrid and Energi models include the Active Noise Control feature which sends out sound waves that cancel out sounds like engine and wind noise.

“These changes are the result of listening to feedback from dozens of listeners over hundreds of hours,” said Alan Norton, senior technical leader for Ford audio systems. “It’s all about attention to detail. By improving radio reception and taking other steps to improve sound quality and acoustics, we aim to give customers the consistent, enjoyable sound they deserve. In many cases, the best audio systems our customers have are in their vehicles. We don’t want them to settle for low sound quality.”

Ford is all about innovation and bringing higher-quality products and feature offerings to their customers. Whether it be a new sedan, the 2017 Ford Fusion, or a AWD capable crossover, the 2017 Ford Escape, there's a perfect Ford vehicle out there for you. At North Brothers Ford we can help you find the perfect vehicle, with quality audio-centric entertainment options through Ford SYNC, for your needs and budget. You can conveniently schedule a test-drive online on any of our vehicles.

Not sure whether you should buy or lease? We've developed a Buying vs. Leasing comparison guide plus a detailed break-down of the process on each option that you can check out on our How to Buy and How to Lease pages. If you already have a vehicle and want to keep it looking and running its best, make sure to check out our comprehensive Dashboard Warning Light Guide Routine Maintenance and Seasonal Maintenance pages on our website for tips and information.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

WESTLAND, Mich.––The backpacks, school supplies, and clothes are taking heavy reign in stores, which means it's back-to-school. For children it might mean the end of a fun summer, whereas for adults it means a new schedule to adopt and extra effort to make everything go smoothly. You can buy all the supplies and start putting the kids to bed earlier, but what else can you do to get ready? We've got some tips on how to get ready for back-to-school that'll make the transition into the new school year a breeze for both you and the little ones!

1. Start eating meals around your future school schedule.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

While it seems silly to start this ahead of time, it'll help your body adjust as a whole. This will especially help kids get into a good morning habit of eating breakfast, and doing it on time, so they're not eating on the run. It'll also help their tummies adjust to a different schedule so they're not gurgling out of hunger in the middle of class. You can take it one step further by creating a meal plan for the first week, or prepping with some freezer meals that'll make dinner easier!

2. Start a new sleep schedule two weeks prior to the start of school.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

Did you know there's good and bad times to wakeup based on when you fall asleep? Your body sleeps in stages, and waking up in a deep-sleep stage can set the mood of tiredness for the rest of the day. To help your kids be the most focused in class, start a new sleep schedule based on the chart above as soon as possible so they're ready to roll when school starts back up. You can find a way to do this yourself by using this sleep calculator.

3. Review pick-up and drop-off procedures for before and after school.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

Even if it's the same as last year, review when you'll leave the house in the morning, when you'll drop them off at school, and when you'll pick them up at the end of the day. If you're not the driver, make sure you have the correct bus or carpool schedule, and review with your student. Get them as familiar as possible with the schedule so there's no running after the bus in the morning, and so you can rest easy.

4. Talk to your student regarding their feelings of going back-to-school.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

You might remember your feelings about going back to school, or going for the first time. Were you anxious? nervous? excited? Making a note to talk about your kids about going to school and their feelings about doing so may make the process easier. It'll give you insight on what steps to take. If you have a nervous student, you can take extra time to prepare their day with them, or help find them an activity or group to join that'll help them have fun and relax with their peers. Simply talking to your student will help them get in the mindset, and allow them to ask questions or for help if they need it.

5. Schedule times for doing homework and physical activities.

How to Get Ready for Back-to-School

Physical activities must be done just as much as homework. There should be a fine balance of these things throughout your child's day. You can help by establishing a time and place homework should be done, preferably when you're available for help. You can also help to establish a time for physical activity by getting your student involved in extracurricular sports or even neighborhood groups. Setting a time for these things will allow your student to not feel limited to one or the other and will help them learn time management.

No matter where your kids are headed this year, we hope these tips on how to get ready for back-to-school will help your entire family be prepared for the transition. If your students won't be using the bus to get to school, you'll want to make sure you have a safe and entertaining ride for getting to and from school! This could mean taking care of routine maintenance like with filters and fluids so your family is always safe on the road, reviewing our Dashboard Warning Light Guide so you're prepared for any situation, or it could mean taking a second look at your Ford SYNC to see what it can do to make your mornings a little better! It might even mean you need a new or certified pre-owned car. We'll help you and your family find just what you need at your budget. If it's service you need, we can help with that too. Make sure to check out our coupons page to see how you can save.

How to Check Your Brakes During Brake Safety Awareness Month

How to Check Your Brakes During Brake Safety Awareness Month

WESTLAND, Mich.––This August is dedicated to brake safety. While they may not always be on your routine maintenance schedule, they should be! Your brakes may only need to be replaced every once and a while, depending on your driving style and frequency of use, but they can be easily inspected to ensure your safety on the road. There are also signs you can look out for in the case your brakes have a problem or need replacing. Below we'll tell you how to check your brakes during Brake Safety Awareness Month because we care about your safety on the road!

First off, let's go over how brakes work! Although it may seem simple, it's a system made of many parts and has the big job of stopping or slowing down your moving car. Your brakes use hydraulic pressure so a simple press of your brake pedal can be transferred into pressure on the brake rotors. Check out the video below for a visual example of brakes in action.

Now we'll go over some signs you may be having brake issues:

-You hear squealing or grinding while braking. If you hear grinding, don't wait any longer for a service appointment because your brakes are too worn and won't be able to effectively stop the car. A squealing noise may not need immediate service, but will need attention soon. Your brakes are designed to make that noise to indicate that the pads need changing.

-Your brakes feel soft when you press. Are your brakes taking more pressure to stop? Or does the brake feel 'soft' or 'spongy'? This could mean your brake fluid needs replacing. You'll want to get your car into our Service Center as soon as possible!

-Your dashboard brake warning light is on. Even if you don't feel or hear anything strange when applying your brakes, you'll still need to have them inspected. The sensor on your brake detected something in order to make the light turn on. Check out our new Dashboard Warning Light Guide for a full run down of all your dash lights, what they mean, and what to do when one lights up.

-Your steering wheel shakes when you brake. This could mean you have warped brake rotors. The uneven surface of the rotors is what causes the shaking when you brake. If the shaking is intense enough to disrupt your driving, it's time to schedule a service appointment as soon as possible. Your brake rotors will need to be replaced eventually, so it's a good idea to have them inspected even if the shaking is minimal.

-Your brakes are visibly shedding metallic flakes. This is a clear sign your brakes are wearing quickly. If you see flakes near your brakes, have them inspected to ensure your brakes structural integrity on the road.

Testing your brakes is as simple as using them and paying attention! You can otherwise check with your eyes. Most vehicles allow you to see the brake pad through the wheel. If the brake pad looks too thin, think less than .25", then it most likely needs replacement. Some brake pads have a wear indicator slot in the middle. If the slot looks like it's not there, then it most likely needs replacement. If you need help checking your brakes or would like a more thorough inspection, we'd be happy to do so at your next oil change at North Brothers!

We want to ensure you have a reliable vehicle that can get you from point A to point B without compromising your safety. This all depends on the routine maintenance you do on your vehicle, and we're here to help make that happen. We'll not only show you how to check your brakes during Brake Safety Awareness Month, but also provide you help on everything else. We regularly update our website with helpful information and tips about routine and seasonal maintenance. Plus, you can schedule your service appointment online, so your entire routine maintenance experience is easy. We're always here to help and answer any questions you might have regarding brake service or any other auto service you might need. A Comprehensive Dashboard Light Guide Courtesy of North Brothers Ford

WESTLAND, Mich.––Have you ever been driving and noticed a small red, white, yellow, or blue symbol light show up on your dashboard? Have you ever been confused as to why that little light showed up and what it means? We've all been there, but with this comprehensive dashboard light guide courtesy of North Brothers Ford, you'll no longer be wondering. The new page on our website contains pictures and explanations of each dashboard light that you might see show up. Let's briefly review what information we cover on the page.

A Comprehensive Dashboard Light Guide Courtesy of North Brothers Ford

Vehicle Performance Light Meanings & What To Do

Your vehicle relies on many different components to run, so when one of those components isn't working as it should, a light will typically show up on your dashboard. This could be anything from a generic Check Engine light to a Brake System light. These lights usually mean your vehicle should be serviced or inspected as soon as possible to avoid further damage or a disabled vehicle all together. On this section of the page we go over each of the following lights:

-Check Engine Light
-Battery Light
-Engine Oil Light
-Brake System Light
-Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Light
-Electric Park Brake Light
-Engine Coolant Temperature Light
-Low Fuel Level Light
-Low Tire Pressure Warning Light
-Powertrain Fault Light

Optional Feature Lights & What They Mean

Whatever vehicle you drive, chances are you have features special to your make and model. For instance, some newer Ford vehicles come with adaptive cruise control or other advanced safety features. In this section on the page, we cover all the possible lights you might see that relate to optional features. We go over the following lights:

-Adaptive Cruise Contol
-Auto Start Stop Indicator
-Blind Spot Monitor Indicator
-Cruise Control Light
-Heads Up Display Indicator
-Lane Keeping Aid Indicator
-Stability Control Light

Standard Notification Lights & What They Mean

While you think of a warning light as a bad thing, there are lights that are simply there to indicate if something is on or off, open or close, etc. In this section we go over all the standard notification lights you might see on your dashboard. Some of these lights require immediate action, some do not, but most of these lights don't mean you need service. On this section of the page we cover these lights:

-Turn Signal Indicator
-Door Ajar Indicator
-Hood Ajar Indicator
-Trunk Ajar Indicator
-Fasten Safety Belt Indicator
-Front Airbag Indicator
-Front Fog Lights Indicator
-High Beam Lights Indicator

This comprehensive dashboard light guide courtesy of North Brothers Ford isn't just a list to tell you what each light means, but it's to also tell you what to do or what not to do when you see each light! Your safety means a lot to us and we want to help you stay safe on the road. While knowing what these lights means is important, so is routine maintenance to help and avoid seeing some of these warning lights on your dashboard. Staying up to date on maintenance is as simple as reading through our seasonal maintenance pages, and our routine maintenance pages, like the Filters and Fluids pages. We're here to help, not just over the internet, but in person, too!
