Ford Fund Responds to Natural Disasters

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– Throughout the month of September, the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands were struck by a series of natural disasters. At the beginning of the month, Mexico was struck with two powerful earthquakes, which damaged important infrastructure throughout the southern part of the country. Later in September, Hurricane Maria severely damaged Puerto Rico with category 4 winds, knocking out power to the entire country. In light of these events, the Ford Fund responded to the natural disasters with efforts to provide disaster relief to those affected by these tragic events.

Ford Fund Responds to Natural Disasters

Working directly with Ford Mexico and the Dealers Civic Committee, the Ford Fund quickly contributed $200,000 to the United Way of Mexico's Earthquake Relief Fund. They also promised to match employee donations to the Mexico Earthquake Relief Fund by up to $50,000. This relief fund will provide food, shelter, water, and medicine to those affected by the disaster, and will also go towards supporting long-term assistance to help communities rebuild and recover.

Ford Fund Responds to Natural Disasters

The Ford Fund will also be contributing $100,000 in donations to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Local Ford dealers will also match the Ford Fund's donation by contributing an additional $100,000. This combined donation will be distributed through a wide variety of nonprofits based on the current needs of those affected by the disaster. Additionally, Ford is continuing to match donations to the American Red Cross by up to $300,000 for those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Currently, Ford employees alone have donated over $1 million and are continuing to raise funds in solidarity.

Ford Fund Responds to Natural Disasters

If you would like to make a difference in these communities, donate to the Mexico Earthquake Relief Fund or the American Red Cross to have your contributions matched by the Ford Fund. Car Components You Should Inspect This Fall

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– With the temperatures starting to cool down, everyone is getting prepared for the fall and winter seasons that will soon arrive in Michigan. Many Michiganders make efforts to prepare their homes and wardrobes for the colder weather, but did you know that getting your vehicle ready for the winter is just as necessary? These car components you should inspect this fall will keep you warm, safe, and secure once the winter arrives. These important components in your vehicle should be checked before the snow starts to fall because the colder weather can seriously damage these parts if they're already worn or broken down.

Car Components You Should Inspect This Fall

Windshield Safety

Believe it or not, your windshield is one of the most important safety features in your vehicle! It protects you and your passengers from outside elements and, in the event of a collision or rollover, keeps your vehicle’s structural integrity intact. If you find any chips or cracks on your windshield, make sure you get them fixed right away! Cold weather can expand the size of chips and cracks and can increase any damage done to your windshield. Schedule service with us today to prepare your windshield for the cold weather.

Heating and Ventilation System

The biggest difference between you and a cold drive to work is your heating and ventilation system! Not only does it keep you warm while you’re braving Michigan weather, it can also potentially save your life in the event that you wind up stranded during a storm. Making sure that your heating and ventilation system are in working condition for the winter season is extremely important. If you want your heating and ventilation system looked at before the winter begins, schedule an inspection with us right away and we'll get it up to speed for the winter months.

Weather Strip Maintenance

Your vehicle’s weather strips, the black, rubber linings on the outside of your windshield, windows, doors, and trunk, do a lot more for you than you might think! They serve as a seal, keeping debris, water, and other outside elements from entering your vehicle. If you hear a "wind noise" while you're driving, notice water in your cabin, or feel wind while you drive, one of the weather strips in your vehicle could be torn or damaged. If you notice any of these factors or suspect damage, we're happy to help! Bring your vehicle in and we'll take a good look at it to make sure your weather strips are ready to take on the snowy months ahead.

Belts and Hoses

Your vehicle’s engine requires a lot of working components in order to get you from Point A to Point B. The belts and hoses in your engine play a key role when it comes to the functionality of your vehicle. When the seasons change and temperatures drop in Michigan, your belts and hoses can crack and wear down quickly. If you hear any strange noises coming from your engine or if your engine keeps overheating, schedule a check-up as soon as you can to have your belts and hoses inspected! Without properly maintained belts and hoses, your engine may not even work properly, so you'll want them checked right away if you notice something wrong!

Fluid Levels

From your oil level to wiper fluid, your vehicle's fluids are all extremely important! Regularly checking your engine oil, coolant, and other fluids before the winter will help you remain safe and secure when the snow finally sets in. If you aren't sure how to check your coolant, oil, or other fluids in your engine, use our service tips and tricks to help you locate and check your fluid reservoirs. Otherwise, visit our service center and we'll gladly help you find them!

Your vehicle is a huge investment. Making sure that it’s able to run efficiently, especially during the changing seasons, is extremely important! From your fluid levels to your windshield, the car components you should inspect this fall can make all the difference this upcoming winter season! If left unchecked, you can risk damaging important components in your vehicle and can even endanger your safety. Consult our service tips and tricks for additional advice on keeping up on your routine maintenance, and take advantage of our service specials and coupons to get a great deal on service this fall!

Why Ford Made a Man Dress as a Car Seat

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– Andy Schaudt, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute researcher, has spent this past August dressed as a car seat. Yes, you read that correctly. Shaudt, along with several other Virginia Tech researchers, has been commissioned by Ford to help test their new driverless vehicles. He spent his summer in Arlington, dressed in a car seat costume, observing the reactions of other drivers and making sure Ford's autonomous vehicles are able to run efficiently. Find out why Ford made this man dress as a car seat and discover how close we really are to the future of self-driving cars.

Why Ford Made a Man Dress as a Car Seat

Andy Shaudt and other drivers had the chance to give these autonomous vehicles a firsthand look, driving over 1,800 miles and collecting over 150 hours of 360-degree video from cameras mounted on their Ford Transit vans. Ford's goal with this testing and research is to employ "standard visual language" to allow driverless vehicles to communicate with other drivers. Autonomous vehicles will be equipped with a bar of flashing white lights on the windshield to indicate acceleration, yielding, and braking while the vehicles drive. These lights will help other drivers spot autonomous vehicles to help them differentiate between driverless vehicles and regular drivers on the road.

"The Virginia experiment was the brainchild of Ford engineer John Shutko, who has been pushing the idea of the light bar with colleagues from other car companies around the world. He said Ford doesn’t see a competitive advantage in the research but instead wants to share its findings as a way to improve safety and get people more comfortable with driverless vehicles.

Duke robotics expert Missy Cummings — who has raised safety concerns about a hasty driverless rollout — applauded the idea of publicly identifying the vehicles. “I want them painted flashy hot pink or something really obvious, so I know and can give them due deference,” she said." - The Washington Post

While we still have a few years of testing and research until self-driving vehicles are available to the public, the technology may become available sooner than we think! Check up on our blog regularly to find updates on Ford news, new vehicle offers, vehicle brochures, and much more. Now that you know why Ford made a man dress as a car seat, you can expect to see several other self-driving Ford vehicles driving around large urban areas like Detroit. If you're interested in getting a closer look at the Ford vehicles the researchers tested, take a look at our model lineup to view the Transit and other Ford models featured in the video above! Check in with our manufacturer and regional incentives frequently to find discounts on Ford vehicles, service, and more! We hope to see you soon at North Brothers Ford!

How Your Brakes Work & Brake Maintenance Tips

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– The most important safety components in your vehicle are your brakes. Your brakes can be the difference between you and a collision on the road. Keeping them properly maintained and cared for is extremely vital to your safety. Learn how your brakes work & brake maintenance tips to keep you and your passengers safe while on the road. Find out what makes this crucial component work and what you can do to extend the life of your brakes today!

How Brakes Work

How Your Brakes Work & Brake Maintenance Tips

When you're driving on the road, your vehicle uses kinetic energy, or energy in motion, to help move it along at quick speeds. Your brakes work to eliminate that kinetic energy by using friction, which changes the kinetic energy to heat. Putting your foot on your brake pedal transmits hydraulic fluid through a series of pipes into a variety of cylinders next to the brakes on your wheels. This system multiplies the force you apply on your brakes to cause your vehicle to slow to a stop.

Most vehicles consist of disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels (you can find out what types of brakes your vehicles have by consulting your owner's manual). Disc brakes, located on your front wheels, are made up of brake discs, calipers, and pads. When you press down on your brake pedal, the hydraulic fluid in your brakes cause your caliper to press your brake pad against your brake's disc. This creates friction, which allows your vehicle to slow down. Drum brakes, which are equipped on your back wheels, consist of a brake drum and brake shoes. When you press down on your brake pedal, the brake shoes push against the surface of your brake drums, slowing your back wheels to a stop.

Brake Maintenance Tips

How Your Brakes Work & Brake Maintenance Tips

Want to make sure your brakes last as long as possible? Use a few of our tips below to increase your safety on the road:

  • Keep a consistent maintenance schedule: You should have your brakes inspected every 12,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to. If you aren't sure when you last had your brakes inspected, schedule an appointment with us to have them looked at right away!
  • Watch your speeds: Driving at high speeds increases the kinetic energy of your vehicle, which means braking at higher speeds can generate more heat on your brake pads. Too much heat can wear your brake pads down at a very fast rate, so make sure to watch your speeds on the road!
  • Carry less: If you tend to travel with a lot in your vehicle, that additional weight can generate more friction when you brake, which can wear your brake's components down at a much faster rate than normal. Carry less when you drive to prevent this from happening!
  • Practice coasting: Working hand in hand with watching your speed, coasting can help to generate less kinetic energy when you eventually have to brake, which will extend the life of your brakes. Try to coast more so that your brakes last longer!
  • Pay attention to signs of wear: Your brakes are equipped with a variety of safety measures and components to inform you when certain parts are in need of repair. Make sure you know how to spot the signs of brake wear so you know when to get your brakes looked at!

At North Brothers Ford, your safety is our top priority. We want you and your passengers to be the safest they can be on the on the road, no matter how short or long your drive may be. Knowing how your brakes work and brake maintenance tips can make the difference between you and an accident. If you want to remain proactive to prevent any damage to your brakes, read up on our brake service advice to find out more information about brake care. Need your brakes looked at? Schedule a brake inspection with us and use our service specials and coupons to save money on your next service!

By donating over $3.5 million in hurricane relief and contributing to the "Texas is Family" initiative, Ford provides aid to victims of Hurricane Harvey. A portion of the money raised between Ford and its dealers will be donated to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Team Rubicon, Toolbank, and Catholic Charities, and will provide four Chariot Transit Vans that will support future efforts in the area.

In the Texas area, Ford dealers have donated over $200,000 to the Cowboys-Texans telethon and have made a commitment to donating over $1 million to help dealership families and local charities. Nationally, Ford has promised to match this donation total by contributing up to $1.5 million to community relief foundations. Ford's dealers, both in Texas and throughout the United States, have dedicated their efforts towards raising additional funds to help reach their donation goal of $1 million.

Ford Provides Aid to Victims of Hurricane Harvey

“Our hearts go out to all of those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Texas is like family for Ford,” said Jim Hackett, Ford president and CEO. “Our teams are working day and night to help our customers, dealers and communities get back on their feet.”

The "Texas is Family" initiative is a customer assistance bundle Ford will be providing to victims of Hurricane Harvey. People affected by the hurricane receive a no-haggle, below-invoice price typically given to employees and families of Ford, a low credit APR or lease rate, and won't have to make any payments until next year. The Texas is Family program also allows existing customers to defer their payments for up to two months, and first responders in the area are eligible to receive a special $1,000 discount in addition to any available incentives.

Currently, 101 of Ford's 114 dealerships in the Houston region are open. 13 of them have been closed and 10 (some open and some closed) have sustained severe damage.
