These 18 fascinating facts about Halloween are sure to answer any questions you have about the spookiest time of the year!

18 Fascinating Facts About Halloween

  1. According to a survey conducted in 2016, the most popular Halloween candy in Michigan are chocolate M&Ms!
  2. Last year, over 171 million people in the US celebrated Halloween. This year, over 70% of Americans are expected to partake in this year's spookiest celebration!
  3. Americans are currently projected to spend over $8.4 billion on Halloween decorations, costumes, candy, and other holiday supplies.
  4. Halloween is the sweetest holiday of the year. Chocolate sold on Halloween doubles the amount sold on Valentine's Day. In fact, over $1.9 billion a year is spent on Halloween candy alone in the United States. That's a lot of candy!
  5. Any candy you get this Halloween will last a lot longer than you'd think! Chocolate can last up to two years if properly stored in a dry area, and hard candy can last up to a year.
  6. If you're giving away candy this year, make sure you buy the right kind! 50% of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared to 24% who prefer non-chocolate and 10% who would rather have gum.

  8. Halloween has gone by several names throughout history. It's been called All Hallow's Eve, Witches' Night, Snap-Apple Night, Samhain, and even Summer's End!
  9. The first celebrations of Halloween began over 6,000 years ago in Ireland. Since then, the holiday has achieved global success and participants can be found in most parts of the world!
  10. Halloween originated as an ancient Irish festival for the dead called "Samhain." On Samhain, participants would dress up as ghosts and demons and leave "treats" on their front porch to appease any spirits that might otherwise haunt them.
  11. If you went trick-or-treating in the Middle Ages, you'd have to sing or dance to receive your treat! This practice is called "mumming" and is still frequently practiced in some parts of Europe.
  12. Halloween isn't celebrated in Mexico. Instead, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st. Participants dress up like the dead and parade down the streets in honor of those who have passed on to the next life.
  13. In China, the Lantern Festival takes the place of Halloween. Dragon-shaped lanterns cover the streets to help guide spirits back to their homes for the day, where families typically leave food and water by their ancestors' portraits to welcome them for the evening.

Duct Tape Improves the Ford Mustang's Efficiency

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– We may not think about it all the time, but sometimes small innovations can completely change the way our world works. Things like velcro, Band-aids, and even tape have been some of the greatest innovations of the modern era and are still used today to develop and improve modern inventions. Recently, Ford used duct tape to improve the Mustang's efficiency. Yes, you read that correctly: duct tape.

Duct Tape Improves the Ford Mustang's Efficiency

This small innovation has made a huge splash with the new 2018 Ford Mustang. The goal of this improvement was to reduce front-end drag, which typically slows down vehicles and can cause fuel to burn at a faster rate. By applying a single strip of duct tape to the front grille of the Mustang, the vehicle's front-end drag was reduced by three percent. This innovation has allowed the Mustang to obtain a better grip while on the road, improving its aerodynamic performance and fuel economy by up to 5.6%.

Duct Tape Improves the Ford Mustang's Efficiency

“That little strip of tape made all the difference,” said Mike Del Zio, Ford Vehicle Dynamics Engineer. “The key to the subjective is confidence. At the end of a straightaway, what confidence do you have in being able to brake and make a turn? Things start to come up fast at 155 miles an hour.”

Sometimes, little innovations can really pay off. In the case of the Ford Mustang, duct tape has improved the Mustang's efficiency by giving drivers better gas mileage, improved handling on the road, and a reduced front-end drag. Who would have thought that one piece of duct tape could make such a difference? You can test drive a 2018 Ford Mustang today to experience its improved handling and reduced drag for yourself at North Brothers Ford. If you are interested in learning more about this lightning fast vehicle, take a look at our Mustang Model Overview. You can discover pricing, trim levels, customer reviews, and much more to help you better make your decision. If you have any questions about the Mustang or other Ford vehicles, please feel free to let us know!

Ford Supports Military Veterans with Scholarships

WESTLAND, Mich.,–– In a collaboration with the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Ford supports military Veterans with scholarships through the Trading One Uniform For Another (TOUFA) program. In its second year, the TOUFA program awards scholarships to Veterans interested in earning a certification in automotive maintenance and repair. In a partnership with Quick Lane Tire & Auto, Ford will award scholarships in the amount of $10,000 to five Veterans, which can be used to pay for books, fees, and tuition at universities, trade schools, vocational schools, and other accredited programs.

Ford Supports Military Veterans with Scholarships

Nominations are open for the TOUFA program through December 11th, 2017. If you know any Veterans that are interested in the automotive industry, all you have to do is write a short essay on the QL Trading One website on why your nominee is deserving of the scholarship. The scholarship winners will be announced at this year's Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26th.

Ford Supports Military Veterans with Scholarships

"This scholarship has allowed me to concentrate on my studies more than in the past. I don't have to worry about getting a job to pay for the rest of my schooling, which takes off some of the stress," said veteran Casey Marvicka, one of five 2016 TOUFA scholarship winners. After receiving his scholarship, Casey enrolled in the University of Nebraska. He will be attending classes this fall to improve his skills in automotive maintenance and repair.

“The entire Quick Lane Tire and Auto Center team, which includes over 800 independent Quick Lane operators, is again proud to demonstrate its support for our nation’s veterans in finding meaningful employment,” said Frederiek Toney, president, Global Ford Customer Service Division. “We are honored to stand beside the DAV in awarding these scholarships to our U.S. military veterans, thanking them for their service, and congratulating them on the pursuit of a career in automotive service and maintenance.”

In a partnership with Quick Lane and the DAV, Ford supports military veterans with scholarships to help the heroic Veterans of the United States pursue their passions in the automotive industry. At North Brothers Ford, we pride ourselves on our community involvement. It is our goal to give back to the community that has provided so much to us. Pink Ribbon Riders

How to Give Back During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A small volunteer-based organization, the Pink Ribbon Riders use funds raised to provide gifts, cover medical costs, and assist families affected by breast cancer.

How Your Donation Will Be Used: Donations to the Pink Ribbon Riders come in a gift card format, covering gas costs, treatment, or bills that can become expensive from extensive time in the hospital.

How to Volunteer: Since the Pink Ribbon Riders are a volunteer-based organization, volunteering is the number one way they contribute in the battle against breast cancer. Participate in the Snow Run, event-planning committees, and more this October!
