For a typical production line, hundreds of millions of gallons of water are used per year in the production process. Near-dry machining would help reduce that amount by lubricating cutting tools with a fine spray of oil when and where it is needed. This is a huge change from the previous conventional wet machining methods where the production line would use large amounts of fluid to cool and lubricate the tools in order to make engine and transmissions.
Ford's Cologne Engine Plant in Germany was able to decrease their water use by 50 percent in one year by switching to the near-dry machining process. This process reduces the amount of oil needed by 80 percent while also reducing energy use, and improving the air quality in the plant. Other plants that use the near-dry machining method are:
- Craiova Engine Plant (Romania)
- Livonia Transmission Plant (Michigan)
- Changan Ford Engine Plant (China)
- Romeo Engine Plant (Michigan)
- Cologne Engine Plant (Germany)
- Van Dyke Transmission Plant ( Michigan)
