WESTLAND, Mich.– When you’re driving the highest performing
track-ready pony cars in existence, you’re going to want a set of reliable
wheels that can handle the intensity, which is why Ford makes carbon fiber wheels for the Shelby GT350R Mustang.
Aftermarket companies have been producing carbon fiber
wheels for years, but Ford has been toying around with the idea of becoming the
first automotive manufacturer to mass-produce carbon fiber wheels for a while
now and its ready to debut the development with the GT350R.
Considering the intensity of the GT350R, Ford coats its
carbon fiber wheels with the same ceramic plasma arc spray used on the Space
Shuttle. This coating creates a barrier of thermal protection that prevents
brake heat from taking a toll on the wheel, and also provides an attractive
finish.
Style and thermal protection are assets of Ford’s carbon
fiber technology, but the wheels also improve suspension response times,
chassis performance, weight reduction, and handling. Ford rigorously tests its
carbon fiber wheels to ensure they perform according to these aspects and meet
its strict guidelines for durability, quality, craftsmanship and finish, so you
know they make for a great ride.
All Ford wheels undergo harsh tests that include curb
strikes, UV and chemical exposure and blistering heat, but the GT350R’s new
carbon fiber wheels have a strengthened defense system against these things
thanks to their stiffness, light weight and resilience.
How Ford makes carbon
fiber wheels for the Shelby GT350R Mustang may mislead you to think the
process is simple, but we guarantee there was a great deal of science and
experimentation that went into developing strength and dependability.
An RFID chip, with a unique number tracked by a quality
assurance system, is inserted into a premade structure of woven carbon fiber
strands, after which the structure is infused with resin and cured at high
temperatures. A high-gloss black coating adds extra protection against heat,
and gives the wheels a stylish look.
This process creates one whole structure and eliminates the
need to bond and weld disparate parts together to form a structure, which is
what makes Ford’s carbon fiber wheels so much more durable than typical
aluminum wheels. While you may not own a Shelby GT350R Mustang, the only
available model that currently sports Ford’s carbon fiber wheels, you can find similar lasting durability in the New Ford Cars and New Ford Trucks at our
