WESTLAND, Mich. - With the Ford Mustang's 50th anniversary taking place in April, it's important to look back on how far the pony car has come since its creation in 1964. To celebrate this Ford's long and beautiful history, here's 50 years of (some) Ford Mustang milestones:

1964: Ford introduces the first Mustang on April 17, 1964.

1965: The Shelby GT350 steps on the scene with 306 HP.

1966: Over 1 million Mustangs sold.

1967: The Shelby GT500 is introduced.

1968: A 428 Cobra Jet engine debuts as part of an option package.

1969: 11 different powertrain combinations are now available, including a 290-HP Boss 302, 375-HP Boss 429 and the Mustang Mach 1.

1971: Biggest Mustangs ever are introduced (1 foot longer and 600 lbs. heavier than the original). The Boss 351 debuts.

1974: Redesigned Mustang II is introduced and is 19 in. shorter and 490 lbs. lighter. For the first time, there is no V8 engine and no Mustang convertible.

1977: Fastback models are now available with T-Top removable glass panels.

1979: New "Fox" Mustang debuts and is longer, taller and 200 lbs. lighter than the Mustang II.

1982: Mustang GT returns after 12 years, along with a 5.0-liter V8 engine.

1983: After 10 years of not offering it, Mustang again has a convertible model.

1989: Ford Mustang's 25th Anniversary!

1990: Mustang now comes standard with a driver's side airbag.

1992: The Mustang LX 5.0 develops a cult following and outsells all other models combined.

1993: Ford introduces a limited-production Mustang Cobra. A racing "Cobra R" model (only 107 built) sells out before production even begins.

1994: 30th anniversary arrives and Ford completely restyles the Mustang, changing 1,330 of the vehicle's 1,850 parts.

1996: Mustang GTs and SVT Mustang Cobras are equipped with new 4.6-liter "modular" V8 engine for the first time.

1997: Passive Anti-Theft System becomes standard in all models.

1999: A redesigned Mustang is revealed with creased lines, new hood, grille, fascias and more.

2001: Mustang Bullitt GT makes its debut.

2002: Mustang takes the field alone as the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird end production.

2003: The Mustang Mach 1 model returns.

2004: Ford produces its 300 millionth car. 2004 Mustangs are the last cars built at Ford's Dearborn Assembly Plant - the same plant that produced every model Mustang year since the car was born.

2007: A special "Warriors in Pink" Mustang is introduced to help raise funds for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure breast cancer research.

2008: The 9 millionth Mustang is sold to an Iowa farmer.

2009: Ford Mustang's 45th anniversary!

2012: 2012 Boss 302 returns to the lineup for the first time in more than 40 years.

2013: The supercharged 5.8-liter V8 in the 2013 Shelby GT500 becomes the most powerful production V8 in the world with 662 HP.

2014: The 50th anniversary of the Mustang.
