WESTLAND, Mich. - Team Ford Racing has confirmed the Ford Ranger Dakar entry in the South American Dakar Rally race. Ford has shown the new V8-powered Ranger headed to the Dakar Rally, and it's a beauty. Designed specifically for endurance as opposed to speed, this vehicle is one that is sure to do extremely well.
The Dakar Rally will be in South America this year, taking place from January 5 until January 18th. The rally is designed to specifically showcase Off-Road machinery from all over the globe, and spans a total distance of 8,500 km (over 5,000 miles) through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. There are 13 stages of the competition, with each stage designed to rigorously test the power and endurance of each vehicle.
The V8-powered Ford Ranger headed to Dakar Rally is a modified Ranger (a vehicle not typically sold in the U.S.) that is designed to handle the race and its tasks. Since it is all about endurance as opposed to speed, the race trucks are limited to around 350 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque - meaning it'll only have a max speed of 105 mph. However, the Ranger will contain a 5.0-l V8 engine taken from a Mustang, a six-speed sequential gearbox, liquid-cooled rear brakes and a 132-gallon fuel tank. It's perfectly designed for the race it'll take part in, but it's definitely a vehicle we wouldn't have to pay the gas bill for!
