Ford Motor Company's first Mustang made its debut at the World's Fair in New York! Like no other car in North America at the time, Ford's Product Planning Manager knew the pony car would be a hit after employees were impressed by it. Just how popular the Mustang has become, is something no one could have guessed.
Priced at just $2,368, the first vehicles flew off the lot after dealers were flooded with requests for the new European-styled vehicle right when it went on the market. When the
Ford Mustang first went on sale, Ford Motor Company predicted sales of about 100,000 annually. But after 22,000 orders were placed for the car on the first day alone, sales for the first year reached 417,000. Exponentially increasing the already impressive sales numbers, the 'Stang being featured as the pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500 helped the automaker reach one million vehicles sold by the second year!
“When the Mustang was unveiled, the reaction was so positive that there was no doubt it was going to be a success,” recalls Joe Oros, chief designer of Ford’s original pony car.
