WESTLAND, Mich.- Ford Motor Company is currently trying to make sense of a business case for a new compact pickup truck that is possible through all of the difficulties for this segment. Ford ended production of the Ranger in December 2011 and at the same time America lost its last compact pickup truck. Trucks just keep getting bigger and bigger, more powerful, and more capable.
So what happened to the consumer interest for a compact pickup? Well, it still exists, but it has become difficult to produce a compact pickup that makes sense without overlapping the full-size pickup segment. A New Compact Ford Truck would have to have a significant difference in size, price, and fuel economy, for example, 1,000 pounds of payload capacity, 3,000 pounds of towing, and a dramatic reduction in fuel economy. All with a reasonable sticker price. Ford's current global Ranger would have too much overlap with the F-150, so it only makes sense to do something completely different. This could mean that a New Compact Ford Truck F-100 may not be a traditional body-on-frame truck. It just may be a car-based pickup.
But, the Ford Compact Pickup Truck's price presents even further difficulties since the current Ford F-150 is priced at just $24,500 before discounts. It is is too close in price to the F-150, consumers would just opt up for the larger truck. However, Ford's most basic Fiesta is also priced at $14,000, meaning the New Compact Pickup cannot be priced too low either. This is all aside from production costs too.
But the good news is that Ford is working on it, and sees the market for a true compact truck.
