Groundhog Day History with Punxsutawney Phil

Groundhog Day History with Punxsutawney Phil
WESTLAND, Mich.- The month of February has officially begun, meaning that tomorrow, February 2nd, is Groundhog Day. We will discover our fate and whether we have to endure six more weeks of winter, all depending on whether a groundhog sees his shadow. Now of course this isn't a very accurate way to measure how many weeks of winter are left, and looking back on recent years, winter will probably last much longer than six more weeks.

But, the Groundhog Day tradition that we regard in the United States as a sign of how much longer we have to endure colder temperatures was actually influenced by our ancestors in Europe. This day stems from a time when nature played a more significant role in our lives and animals awakening on specific days held importance. The Europeans looked to the hedgehog on this day when he came out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow.

However, it was actually the Germans that brought this tradition to the United States when they settled in Pennsylvania and determined that the groundhog most closely resembled the European hedgehog and was therefore intelligent and sensible. From here the rest is history. Every year on February 2nd we look to the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania, and wait for him to either see his shadow or give us hope for a shorter winter.
