Biometric Seat Research - Ford Motor Company

Biometric Seat Research - Ford Motor CompanyWESTLAND, Mich.- In-vehicle technology continues to improve with each new model year vehicle, as is evident with Ford Motor Company's newest 2013 Ford Fusion. The new Fusion successfully demonstrates the company's efforts to incorporate breakthrough technology in consumer's vehicles. Most recently, Ford's Biometric Seat Research looks to be even more interactive, influencing our daily driving experiences.

Ford's technology-focused 2013 Fusion is equipped with more than 145 actuators, 4700 relays, and 70 sensors that generate more than 25 gigabytes of data per hour that is processed by over 70 on-board computers! Impressive, and ever overwhelming to think about! But Ford isn't stopping there. Ford's Biometric Seat Research will have the ability to gather even more data to detect the driver's stress level in an effort to help us become better drivers.

The new Biometric Seat Prototype currently experiments with 4 new sensors that Ford is aiming to incorporate into vehicles within 5 years. The lap portion of the seat belt contains a tiny built in sensor that will monitor the driver's breathing, while sensors on the steering wheel, much like the ones you see on exercise machines, will measure heart rate. Along the steering wheel you will also find infrared sensors that can gauge face temperature and then evaluate the skin's temperature against the temperature outside. Combined, these new sensors in the Biometric Seat Prototype will be able to evaluate the driver's stress level and gauge whether the driver is able to fully concentrate on the road. If the Biometric Seat detects that the driver is unable to concentrate fully on the road, a warning will be issued and the system may also block incoming phone calls, or limit the vehicle's speed to prevent potential accidents.
