Ford Is Investing In a Big Wind Tunnel Complex for Fuel Economy

WESTLAND, Mich.,––At Ford Motor Company, it seems like innovation is a large focus in every aspect of mobility; however providing customers with more green options, while meeting emission standards seems to be at the forefront. Ford has recently announced it will be investing in a big wind tunnel complex for fuel economy. This new complex will be a impressive 13 acres and will lie right next to the Driveability Test Facility in Allen Park, MI.

This new aerodynamic testing facility will include the wind tunnel and a state-of-the-art climatic chamber. The wind tunnel will be able to produce winds at speeds of 155-200mph and can simulate full environmental airflow. The wind tunnel will contain a large rolling road belt underneath that will allow cars to run at speeds up to 200 mph.

This means Ford's sports and performance cars, like the Ford Mustang GT or the Ford GT will be able to test at realistic track speeds for better analysis. Just because this rolling road belt can test vehicles that fast doesn't mean Ford's production line won't get great use out of this facility. The facility will not only be able to move the vehicle but will also simulate climates which consumers might encounter.

The wind tunnels can get down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Although we may not always encounter temperatures like that, it's good to know that our car can handle them if we ever need to. But, it's not only cars that Ford will be testing here. Ford will be building a part of the complex just for Super Duty trucks.
