WESTLAND, Mich. – Each year, Ford Motor Co. exposes every one of its 75 global prototype
vehicles to brutally frigid temperatures and observes how they cope through a
series of tests at McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base in the
Florida panhandle. In a demonstration of durable design and quality manufacturing, Ford vehicles of all sizes can withstand subzero temperatures.
The U.S. military’s all-weather laboratory simulates extreme climates
and weather conditions, and enables Ford to examine how well its vehicles
operate in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, despite its location in a state stereotyped as a tropical paradise.
Ford finds it necessary to test its vehicles against such
harsh conditions because it values its customers that live and work in extreme
climates present in areas such as Alaska and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
in Canada.
In the isolated far north, it’s vital for Ford customers to have access to vehicles they can trust won’t stall or fail to start because of low temperatures. These customers also need vehicles that act as refuges from bitter weather that can cause serious injuries.

It’s certain that Ford
vehicles of all sizes can withstand subzero temperatures after the rigorous
tests that take place at McKinley, where engineers make daily changes to the
temperature to guarantee Ford vehicles can buck the cold. These tests led Ford
engineers to fine-tune the F-Series Super Duty’s 6.7L engine after finding that
ceramic gold plugs generate heat quicker than metallic plugs, aiding the
engine’s ability to start in cold temperatures.
Add the ability to conquer the most unwelcoming climates to
your list of reasons for why you should buy one of Ford’s super-machines. While we
might not be as north as Alaska or Yellowknife, you know what it’s like to
experience Michigan’s oppressive winters. At our Westland area used car dealer we see the Ford
vehicles on our lot fight through till spring each year, and we know for a fact that these Ford vehicles are as durable as they come.
